do you have a firewall on? You can't use a regular ethernet cable. It has to be a crossover cable...it looks the same...but the wires at each end of the cable are in a different order. You don't need to use a router, this way you connect the PS2 straight to the computer. You may have to manually set the configuration for the PS2. I noticed the auto config did not work well for me. Open the command prompt and type ipconfig /all (notice the space after ipconfig) and you will get your network settings there IP , default gateway, and DNS server info.
