Update: The mandatory evacuation has been lifted as of Saturday evening. Stay with News 3 for the latest developments.

Police are evacuating homes and businesses within a one mile radius of a North Las Vegas gas company where a propane tank exploded Friday night.

Police say nearly 1,200 residences have been evacuated in the area. Aide and assistance for evacuees is available at Cashman Field, just north of downtown Las Vegas.

Authorities say the evacuation was a necessary precaution -- large propane tank damaged in the explosion at a gas company is still burning and is in danger of erupting.

Highway 15 between Cheyenne Avenue and 215 also has been closed as a precaution. Traffic is being reroute onto the 215. The mandatory evacuation area include the blocks between Lamb Boulevard and Losee Road; south of Ann Road and north of Gowan Street.

The fire at the gas company on Craig Road broke out after a propane tank exploded at about 9 P.M. Friday night. Authorities say the cause was a human error.
