Oakland's homicide tally grew to 132 for the year Saturday night when a man was gunned down near a school just west of the city's border with San Leandro.T
he shooting was reported around 11 p.m. Saturday, police said. It happened in the 400 block of 105th Avenue by Knight Street and near the Lionel Wilson College Preparatory Academy charter school. There was no immediate word on a suspect.
OAKLAND — One man was killed and another man wounded late Saturday night when a gunman opened fire on a group of people attending a birthday party at an East Oakland public charter school, police said. Police said it appears neither of the two men shot knew the 18-year-old woman the party was for or were invited guests.
None of the more than 150 others at the party was hurt.
The man killed was identified Sunday as Hilmon R. Haydon, 23. Even though he had identification indicating he lived in Stockton, he also has family in Oakland and had at least one tattoo that said
"East Oakland" on his arm.
The name of the 20-year-old Oakland man who was wounded in the arm was not released.
The shooting happened about 11 p.m. Saturday in the auditorium of Lionel Wilson College Preparatory Academy, a ninth- to 12th-grade public charter school in the 400 block of 105th Avenue.
The auditorium was being used as the site of the 18th birthday party for a school administrator's granddaughter and about 100 people had beeninvited, police said Sunday. The birthday honoree did not attend the school, police said.
Police said there was no uniformed security present but some chaperones were there.
Word of the party spread in the neighborhood and many uninvited people began showing up, even though some were turned away, police said. Police estimated more than 150 people were in the auditorium when the shooting happened, but only a handful gave accounts to police about what happened.
Police said Haydon "was not originally invited" but still gained admittance.
The 20-year-old, who was wounded, told investigators he heard about the party at a nearby store and had no trouble getting in.
Sgt. Tim Nolan said police are still investigating whether a dispute inside the party prompted the shooting or if it "was something that happened elsewhere where somebody had a grudge against (Haydon) and ran into him there.
"The physical evidence indicates (Haydon) was the intended victim," Nolan said. The shooting happened near the stage area. Some people dragged Haydon to a hallway leading to a parking lot and tried to give him CPR before paramedics arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at 11:27 p.m. Saturday.
The 20-year-old victim started running when the shooting started and it was not until he got to a friend's house a few blocks away that he realized he had been shot. He was driven to a hospital by a relative.
It was the second shooting in several months during a party at the school, police said.
The Saturday night killing was the 132nd homicide in Oakland so far this year, compared with 73 on the same date in 2005.
