The Yuba County Sheriff's Department is seeking a man who may know what a San Jose contractor was doing before his body was found in the Yuba River, Sheriff Steve Durfor said Tuesday.
The body of Dennis Alan Knode (pronounced "node") was found Jan. 28 about a mile west of the Parks Bar bridge off Highway 20 near Smartsville with a single gunshot wound.
The man being sought was seen by a witness the day before Knode's body was found. The nature of Knode's contact with the man may help explain the circumstances of the death, said Oakes.
Investigators aren't saying whether a gun or other relevant evidence was found and aren't yet classifying the death as a homicide or suicide.
The man is white or Hispanic, of average height and weight and in his 20s, said Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Melanie Oakes.
Anyone who knows the man, or the man himself, is asked to call the Sheriff's Department at 749-7777.
It's possible the man did not know Knode and had a chance encounter with him, said Oakes.
A road rage incident has been ruled out as a motive, she said.
Oakes said earlier this week that detectives have "a fairly good idea what happened" but chances are even the death will never be ruled as either a homicide or suicide.
Knode's Hummer was found next to the river. His wife told San Jose police she thought the vehicle was parked at the San Jose airport while Knode was in Colorado.
Department of Fish and Game biologist James Lyons found Knode's body snagged on a rock in the river. The Sheriff's Department search and rescue team pulled the body from the river with the help of a California Highway Patrol helicopter, according to a coroner's report.
Knode, president of DK Associates General Contractors, had one of his business cards in his pocket.
