Photoshop Technique Question...

Whats up?

Had a quick question that no one has been able to answer for me yet. I know its something pretty basic, but how do you create backlighting in Photoshop. Example: Cover Example

The lighting effect on Lloyd Banks face. A lot of mixtapes use this effect. How is it done?

I've tried messing with curves, contrast, duplicating layers and changing layer modes of the duplicated layer and still haven't really gotten that close. Is it dodged to lighten the highlights?

try using the dodge & burn tools alittle ........some color overlayz would work too

Definitely do it manually like Evilwayz suggested. Use your Burn and Dodge tool. For the Dodge tool make sure the range is "Highlight" with the opacity at about 25% and for the Burn tool set it to "Shadows" with the opacity at about 10%. You probably won't need much of the Burn tool as this effect is really easy to achieve. If Burn tool is selection, hold the Alt-key and you can use the Dodge tool, let go and it goes back to the Burn, this will help you work more fluently.

ima say different layer overlays faded in on the edges........again, it can be done a number of wayz.......but i think thatz the easiest way

tgarnett ... if you do Filter > Render > Lighting effects ... there is a way to do four background lights .. I forget the exact preset. But, there is a selection that renders four background lights. Check that out. Also, Samos thanks for the tips

i wouldnt recommend doing that, because it permanently alters the base image you use the filter on......if you use the layer overlays, you can just ajust them till you get the right effect......that way if later down the road if you decide to go a different direction you can just remove the layer instead of havin to totally re-do the base image.....jsut a few thingz ive delt with in the past......hope this helpz some

You could duplicate the layer so you can have a clean base image to come back to and then add the effect. Either way would work. Evilwayz is right about altering the base image .. never a good idea.

the dodge, burn technique isn't workin well as far as bringing out the highlights on this particular image ... Distorting the color like oversaturation would do. Might mess with the lighting
