photo editing programs?

i took a bunch of pictures and I need to lighten them up. What's the fastest/easiest program to use. All I need for it to do is help me lighten up pictures - that's it.

well Photoshop is GREAT....But unless u get a warez version it's hundreds of dollars....There's also a free similiar program but I forget the name....Im sure someone will fill in the blank
