Petaluma theater bans hyphy concerts
2 gun incidents this year prompt Phoenix board to outlaw music style linked to drugs, violence

The raucous brand of rap music known as hyphy has been banned officially from Petaluma's Phoenix Theater following a recent shooting and a gun incident earlier this year.

Also, other acts headed to the all-ages concert venue will face more rigorous screening to ensure they are not a threat to safety.

"The hyphy genre promotes a culture of violence," said Bruce Hagen, president of the theater's board of directors. "We decided if someone is advertising themselves as hyphy, we are not going to book them."

Police lauded the move, approved by unanimous vote of the theater board late last week.

The fast-paced music born on the streets of Oakland encourages fighting and drugs and ushers in a "bad element," said Lt. Tim Lyons. "We're very happy they are taking a harder look at the concerts they are bringing to the Phoenix," he said.

The shooting happened in a parking garage outside a Dec. 6 hyphy concert that drew 350 young people. A dispute apparently arose between two groups of men inside the theater near the end of performances by Mistah F.A.B., J Diggs, Rydah J Klyde and Glasses Malone, theater officials said.

The men were escorted by security guards to their cars but apparently continued the fight in the nearby garage on Keller Street.

Shots rang out as police arrived, scattering a crowd of about 50 people gathered to watch. Two young men were wounded.

Police locked the garage in an attempt to round up witnesses and suspects. So far, no arrests have been reported, and the identities of the wounded men have not been disclosed.

It was the second gun-related incident this year.

In January, police arrested a 17-year-old from Concord who retrieved a gun from his car after being kicked out of the theater during a hyphy show. Police said he was carrying a loaded 9mm pistol when they chased him down outside the club.

After the January incident, some directors urged an immediate ban on hyphy. Instead, theater managers canceled three shows and stepped up oversight. Young people and promoters complained that a ban would be unfair and could feed stereotypes about rap music.

It wasn't immediately clear how many hyphy shows have been staged since.

The Dec. 6 lineup was checked out in advance and raised no red flags, Hagen said.

"We did what we thought was necessary the first time around," Hagen said. "The second time around we improved on it."

Now, theater managers will do more rigorous screening, including checking a performer's past shows and such things as fan-based Web sites for signs of trouble, Hagen said.

The review will be applied to all acts, from punk rock to hip-hop. Rap performer Del tha Funkee Homosapien will appear tonight as scheduled.

But hyphy shows of any kind are forbidden, Hagen said.

No hyphy concerts were previously booked, so there are no pending cancellations, he said.

"The Phoenix isn't a place for that kind of scene anymore," Hagen said.

Wow, look at the contradiction. If they know sooooooo much about how "violent" it is, they should have never had any events at all, past or present.

But as soon as the chance of a lawsuit or money loss comes up, NOW everyone is an expert.

Just goes to show how much we ( Bay Area Hip Hop) are worth on the front and back end of this industry, I hope the Hyphy movement can take the same time it spent shakin dreads and pool some dough together to secure a location that won't turn it's back on you once the money gets funny. Wait, isn't that the nature of the "bidnis" anyway?

Eh, What do I know. I'm 30....lol

At least you did what you did thus far Kev, you deserve credit.

Peace.

Its not hyphy its the knuckleheads attending.....before hyphy its been an ongoing problem around the country for Hip Hop music.People dont know how to act simple and plain....hyphy is what the people who dont live in the rap world hide behind because they are to afraid to say its rap music so they say its a "certain" type of rap music....they know they wanna ban rap all together.......we as rap music people and Hip Hop people should be doing things to fix our own Hip Hop problems instead of leaving it up to the people who dont like what we do and will be harsh when they do something about it....if a promoter is not willing to do what it takes to have a non violent show then he/she should not be throwing these partys.......rap shows are constantly plagued with problems thruout the country... some security and a door guy who can count money aint enough....if promoters wanna make long term money they need to invest in things like security devices, more security, plans of action for security in different situations........these people throwin these shows need to step their game up cuz its a bad look for fans, artists and future shows in venues where the spot has been banned.Anybody can throw a show but how many are doing it right......

I somewhat agree with you that when the city hears hyphy/rap they do panic. But isn't it understandable to a certain degree? There's never any shootings/fights at Sharks Games, Maroon 5 concerts, or even at a Living Legends/Grouch/Equipto club performance. When Agenda emptied out what happens? It looks like a god damn sideshow on that corner of the sofa district. I give you props for trying to keep it moving with the Why Hate movement, but let's be realistic, rap shows and hip hop clubs tend to get full of DUMB testosterone filled muthafuckas and a lot of dumb shit tends to happen (ie. Plaxico type of dumb shit). Once we figure out a way to resolve that aspect, then it should get a LITTLE bit better.

The same answer to the question, "Why do police go to the hood more often than the 'burbs?" "Why police locking down SJ at 1:30AM", and "Why are rap concerts being banned from bay clubs/locations? CAUSE DUMB SHIT POPS AT THEM PLACES. For god's sake let's be real for once, the reason fights/rumble happen at rap awards and not at the damn country music awards, is because of what? DUMB ASS NIGGAS DOING DUMB ASS SHIT

But I still believe that SJ is doing too much with the police.

Do the owners not read the newspaper? Oakland is a war-zone, anything that Oakland youth listen to is violent.

Against my wishes, my husband CHOOSE to allow our young under AGE daughter and her friends (their parents allowed the to attend) to attend shows at this place of business. I knew that something bad would EVENTUALLY happen, this should have never happened in the first place.

How many people have to be injured or KILLED for police to get the message.

MUSIC that begets VIOLENCE is VIOLENT............messages that sends messages that the BITCH is okay to rape or kill.........we have set the women's sufferage movement back to before the 1900's.

TEENAGE AND YOUNG WOMEN get a clue.........a man that belittles you in speech and music.......will do worse, and eventually HE WILL KILL you. Wake up! Get out of that scene.

Get the message police..........don't be STUPID ?!?!?!?

It's a sad sign of the times we live in. This type of 'music' which promotes violence has already taken root in the inner cities. Parents need to take a listen to what their kids are idolizing.

What about the music that attract the rockers and I'm not talking about the lite rock bands I'm talking about the ones that bring drug addicts, skinheads, drug dealers, aren't they a danger to society as well.

BTW Ian It's spelled Mariachi, and I agree with you about banning rap, but as far as Mariachi, some of them are great. Here in Jalisco,MX, in a complete Mariachi group today, there are as many as six to eight violins, two trumpets, and a guitar, I hired a group for a Cumpleanos birthday for a friends 60th a while ago and they were fantastic, they did a great song called Nino Perdido The Lost Child, a beautiful piece. Totally mellow and non violent. Where as rap is cr##

"The Phoenix isn't a place for that kind of scene anymore."

When was it ever a place for that kind of scene?? When I was a kid and the Phoenix was my stomping ground, it was punk, indie, and rock shows. Not always the most pleasant crowd, but nothing like this had ever happened when the REAL Phoenix scene was around.

Just 3 comments today:
1) Right on Christianfhenry! Haven't seen it in the posts this morning yet, but I'm sure it's coming.

2) So these punks will simply downplay the hyphy name (by the way, what the heal does that term mean anyway?)to fool the screeners. Remember folks, a rose by any other name is still a rose.

3) Rock, country, jazz, indie, jam bands, etc. are all viable forms of good music. And, we have a huge supply of local musicians and their bands who display their talent in these genres. I applaud them, go listen to them often, and have never seen violence at any of the shows. Maybe the Phoenix should start promoting our local talent more and they might be able to elevate the Phoenix to the class of the Mystic (that does support local bands).

Probably, but at the Phoenix it didn't bring that crowd. It brought the younger crowd who just wanted to see a good, ceap show. The Phoenix was actually the place I ran to hide from all the druggy, homeless creeps downtown.

Hyphy came from rappers like Mac Dre and now Keak da' Sneak. Who are actually very talented rappers. BUT Hyphy came as a result of the "Thizz" movement, "Thizz" is Ecstacy. And when you take it, you get "Hyphy" meaning crazy-energetic. Dancing all night, listening to music of your choice and having a blast (for them).

Drug use is rampant in the majority if music artists. The difference is the types of drugs used, pot is not going to make you go out and kill people but crack can and will.

Also if your beef is with rockers (or any other band for that matter) lets hear about all the killings that are associated with them. Lets also hear about how theses rockers have destroyed entire communities with their unrelenting violence.

Parts of Oakland are for all intents and purposes a war zone where people shoot up the neighborhoods every night. Black culture is the primary cause for this “snitches get stitches” and you will only hear that in the black ghettos.

I don't believe that to be true at all! It happens every where. It is a gang thing not just a black thing. That same type of stuff is happening right here in Santa Rosa!

Oh yeah, that's right. I remember now. The little white kid in the suburb is the one who came up with that phrase.
