Students return to class this morning at Patterson High, after a fight involving more than 100 students closed campus Wednesday.

Two 17-year-old students were arrested and four more were being questioned in connection with the brawls that started at about 10 a.m. on the campus at 200 North 7th Street in Patterson.

After someone pulled a fire alarm and the school's 1,000 students emptied out of their classrooms, numerous fights broke out.

A number of students suffered minor injuries.

The fights ended quickly, but deputies locked down the campus and went from classroom to classroom to investigate reports that there may have been someone on campus with a gun.

Students were released from school at 1:30 p.m.

Investigators believe the brawl may have been triggered by members of the Runners, a new Patterson gang authorities have linked to growing trouble around the school in recent weeks.

Members of the mixed-race gang, including many members authorities said moved to Patterson recently from the Bay Area, were believed to have sparked the fight as part of rising tensions with other more established Patterson gangs.

"Whoever is willing to join is more than welcome, terrorizing their neighborhoods," Stanislaus County Sheriff's spokesman Raj Singh said. "That's what they're doing."
