... what is the allure of mixtapes to the consumer?

And why do people still check for them even though it's different cats rappin over the same 12 beats ignoring the format of a true mixtape (not everbody, but most artists)?

Yea, bay mixtapes. With the exception of a few artists nobody is really doin em right out here.

Is it that folks just like to hear their local favorites rap to these other tracks that are certified hits for someone else? It's like "ooooh that would've been a hit for so and so if he had that beat first"

I don't get it....

i feel u. i think mixtapes should be something that artists basically hand out to everyone for good promotion. i like how done deal redid some of the hits like welcome to atlanta and in the club.

i need to see a REAL album come out soon from somebody like quinn or marv. it's been way too long of a wait. i guess they want to do it right which is good cuz i really wanna see someone blow up big and quinn or marv could do it.

the only mixtape i thought was worth coppin was that messy K.O. alition tape, cause he used a bunch of beats i hadn't heard. I'm gettin really tired of this mixtape craze that's poppin up. I would like to hear the occasional beat used by bay artists, maybe like 1 a cd, that's including ol' school songs not just current shit, other than that, i think it's pretty lame to use other peoples beats on songs that are out at the same time. that's just my opinion

take the dope beats that you like and rock on em... give it away free as promo and thats it.. really its that putting out an album costs so much and mixxtapes are free.. so or should be if you doin em right... i aint gonna sale a mixx tape cause those beats aint mine and it is kinda lame to steal someones work and make bread off em... but i will rock over a beat thats out that people already like and put it on the net for free as promo..

my 2 penny's

oh yeah peep my shit....

I don't really push mine in the bay because the bay as a whole still doesn't get the mixtape scene. I been gettin more support mixtape wise in the south and east.

besides...nobody is forcing anyone to buy anything...if you don't like mixtapes as a listener, then it's always your choice not to download it or not to cop it for however much someone is asking.

One thing i've noticed is everyone is always sayin how all the underground cats will shit on mainstream ones, but then the underground ones steal a beat and it still aint comin nowhere close to the original song.

^ dj mind motion rocks the done deal party

they shit over alot of those beats, i guess u don't have it or something. that's what i think a mixtape should be like. its much better when a real dj is mixing the songs.

sorry to say, but the only tight mixxtapes i have heard are the ones that come from the east. But not to say alot of that shit aint wack azz well. Like those "watch me do me" pt. 1 and 2. that shit tight, those FIRST 50/g-units were tight. It should be a mix of new "original" shit mixed in with some songs over mainstream beats. them bang'em smurf/domination records that have been coming out on these mixtapes are fire.......jmo

I'll ask my original question again..

... what is the allure of mixtapes to the consumer?

A lot of you cats read what you wanna read of a post without readin the whole thing. Then you formulate a response to a post that you half read and miss the point. I aint attackin cats that make these mixtapes (you would think the skin would be thicker around here), I'm just tryin to understand the consumer's point of view on em.
