DAY ONE

fisher report:

(On the condition of the players coming back to camp)

Yeah they left in good shape and came back in good shape so we didn’t have any issues. We went through our conditioning tests this morning and were very pleased with the results and obviously it carried over into the practice field today.

(On relief of [Albert] Haynesworth’s return)

Well it’s a good situation for everybody. We’re all very pleased with the resolution and now can put it behind us and get ready for the season. Albert will be on the practice field tomorrow and it will all be behind us.

(On importance of Chris Johnson practicing as soon as possible)

Personally, I can’t concern myself with who’s not here. I’m very confident that this thing is going to get done quickly, you know, Mike [Reinfelt] and Vinny [Marino] and Steve [Underwood] are working very hard at it. We feel like it’s close, I’m sure Mike’s talked to you about it. So as soon as it’s done he’ll come out and well get him caught up. He’s a bright young man who picks everything up, he understands the offense. I’m sure he does not like missing practice but that’s the business side and we’ll get him out as soon as we get things done.

(Difference in Vince Young’s approach/confidence level)

He’s much more comfortable with what he’s doing even though we’ve put in some significant changes this offseason. He’s worked at it, he came in this week and was eager and anxious to get started and we had a good first day. We’re going to continue to add and he’s going to continue to learn. But the subtle things and the work that he’s done with both Craig [Johnson] and Mike [Heimerdinger] are carrying over now and on the practice field and it’s showing with the production.

(On how good the team is right now)

We’re undefeated right now. That’s about all I can tell you. It’s an anxious football team, we feel like we have depth and we’ll just have to wait and see.

(On if the veterans have stepped up more so this season)

Well we noticed that several years ago particularly because we went out and got some key free agents, namely Kevin [Mawae] and Chris Hope and David [Thornton] and Kyle [Vanden Bosch] and they had a big effect on the club a couple years ago. We’ve got the younger players that, now, everybody understands how to do things. That creates a situation where you mature quicker and so far this offseason, we’ve seen nothing but a very mature, determined football team.

DAY TWO

fisher report:

(On the return of Jevon Kearse and David Thornton)

Yeah, you know it was good to get both Jevon [Kearse] and David Thornton back, they were excused for a couple days. They were excited to come back, it worked out well, they came back for the first practice we had in shoulder pads. It was a good day overall. I was pleased with the tempo and pleased with the ability to practice together. It’s hot, they worked through the first part of practice in the heat and settled down and stayed focused. We had very few mistakes in a practice where you would expect more mistakes because of the heat.

(On players wearing shoulder pads for the first time this year)

We got a lot done in the first couple of practices but you’re going to play in shoulder pads and so were going to practice in them. We’re going to do it again tomorrow and then were going to pick it up with two on Tuesday and we’ll have a full-padded practice on Tuesday afternoon. Part of our approach has been to acclimate, to rest and recover, but when you come out with shoulder pads on we’ve got to get things done and they did.

(On if the defense seems faster this year)

I think we have increased our overall team speed, in all three phases, which is good. The defense is running to the ball and a big part of that is because of their conditioning and I think it’s also because of the fact that we’re going once a day. You can cut it loose out here in three or four periods and still recover and do it so we just want to get accustomed to playing full speed every snap.

(On having the entire roster together out on the field)

No, we’re basically in the middle of camp. Everybody’s here and everybody’s healthy and we’re practicing, trying to get better every day. They’re meeting, they’re enthusiastic, they like what they’re doing and they’re working after a heated practice so I can’t ask for anything more from them right now.

(On if defensive expectations are higher this year)

We expect to do better in all three areas but just because you played well the year before doesn’t guarantee anything. You have to start over and you have to learn that. There were games where we could have played a little better defensively and we didn’t but statistically I think you can pull some satisfaction out of what happened last year. But to me and to [the players] it’s not good enough, you have to do better. You got to win more games, you got to play. Our defense last year, I think, over the course of sixteen games was involved in eight or maybe 10 two-minute drives at the end by their opponent to win the ballgame. We won a number of them but those games are too close, you give up one big play and the outcome is different. We’re trying to get better so we don’t end up in those types of games week after week.

(On Justin McCareins and Justin Gage being the starting receivers)

Well we expect some of the other guys to keep improving and step up but right now both Justins are making more plays. We got some big plays out of them today. Their production level right now is a good target area for the younger guys, that’s what they have to get to. They have to become more consistent on a daily basis and do the rights things because right now Justin and Justin are in the right place at the right time.

(On Brandon Jones’ improvement)

Brandon’s had a good offseason and he’s got that injury thing completely behind him. He’s getting open and making plays and he’s much more comfortable now with another year under his belt.

(On players having trouble with the heat)

Paul Williams went in and got hydrated and came back out. We’ll know in the next couple hours but it looked like they were prepared and they got through it.

(On what he hopes to see from LenDale White that he may not have seen last year due to injuries)

Well he showed up week in and week out despite the fact that he was in a great deal of pain and discomfort with the knee. He’s working to get into better shape, he’s stronger, he’s hitting the holes better and I expect more production out of him throughout the course of the season. When you enter this league and you get into your third year, you expect to see some good things and he has the same expectations.

(On if he is seeing defensive back-ups stepping up)

Well they’re competing, it’s still early, but they’re all competing and they all know what to do. You see those things on the practice field, you just need to see them carry over to game-situations during the preseason.

(On if the defense is among the top in the NFL)

You know I have no idea what’s going on outside of here. I think we have good players in a lot of positions. We have to stop the run and put pressure on the passer and get off on third down and get turnovers, and if we can do that, you know it’s probably a question you need to ask me at the end of the season.

(On his assessment of Jason Jones and William Hayes so far)

Well without pads they were fine. I’m going to go look at the tape now and see how they fared today in pads. It looked like they held their own, they understand what to do. There’s a lot going on right now in their world but they’ve been improving each day and that’s what’s most important.

DAY THREE

(On the status of Rob Bironas)

Well both Rob and Josh [Miller] this morning suffered a mild muscle strain and they’ll be day-to-day. We’re not too concerned about it right now, we’ve checked them out and they’ll be day-to-day. We may be a couple days without them but we don’t plan on making any moves at this point. They’ll get back out there and be fine.

(On if Ingle Martin can be used in any kicking roles)

We may or may not. What’s important is we need to line up our field goal and field goal rush teams and do those kinds of things. We have the machines to handle the kickoffs so we’ll just be day-to-day on it.

(On the impact of a full training camp for Michael Griffin)

It’s going to be beneficial for him, you know he really came on last year. He’s worked hard, he had a good day, I think he had a deal with Vince [Young] I’m not so sure, but he had a good day and made some plays. He’s moving around good and hopefully a full camp will pay off for him.

(On Eugene Amano’s backup center role helping him at guard)

The calls generally work themselves inside out. There’s a unique set of calls that involve the tackles, the tight ends and the guards but he’s familiar with them. And when you’re familiar with making the calls at the center it makes the guard position that much easier.

(On LenDale White not being utilized towards the end of practice)

He was excused and he’s excused tomorrow. He’ll be back on Wednesday.

(On Chris Johnson’s development so far)

He’s doing fine. Each day we’ll put a new concept in, he grasps it immediately, and shows it on the field. He had some big plays today. It would appear the defense, in their own subtle ways, are trying to get a shot and they haven’t got it yet. And that’s a good thing. I’ve seen some noticeable changes in Keith Bulluck’s angles downfield, so, [Johnson] can really run and he’s making some plays.

(On if he’s ever coached a player with Johnson’s speed)

Not with his speed. Not in the backfield. That’s why we drafted him, it’s rare and its unique. We’ve said he’s a football player with track speed and its showing thus far.

(On Johnson’s pass-catching ability)

He’s got good hands, he can catch out of frame and make the tough catch. That allows you to do things down the field and expand the pass package beyond just what you ordinarily do with a running back.

(On comparing Vince Young’s performance in the 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills)

The two drills are completely different. The 7-on-7 drill is basically designed for timing and you should complete more passes in 7-on-7. Once the defensive line arrives it’s difficult to see, you have to move. He made a couple of decisions, couple of throws and [Michael] Grif[fin] made a couple plays. But beyond that I thought [Young] had a good day today
