Campbell just doesnt have it.....

also. something no one has mentioned, is maybe the rams didnt game plan for Gradkowski, him and campbell are 2 different types of qb.

a comparable situation to

Jason Campbell - Alex Smith
Gradkowski - Shaun Hill

obviously gradkowski has a better arm than hill, but look at the situations...

Quit comparing everything to the winless Niners. I mean Campbell would ok if we had better blocking. Gradkowski sees the plays develop quicker and moves a second sooner. That is the difference. You are looking for anything to discredit the Raiders. Win a game.

people are bringing up the fact that Bruce came in as a backup, but remember he STARTED against the Steelers and Bengals last season, and won those games

he had a QB rating of 121.8 on the road against the Steelers when they had time to game plan for him

I know it's just a couple games... but he's givin us some of the best QB play we've seen on the Raiders in a while

That's the game that sold me on Bruce....

It's something I learned about Murphy that game. He drops easy catches sometimes but comes through with clutch TD catches.

Bruce and Murph got that chemistry!

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Bruce Gradkowski's excitement over being appointed the Oakland Raiders' starting quarterback didn't last long. The journeyman backup, having seen the team already make one change after just six quarters, realizes there isn't much job security.

Gradkowski on Thursday worked through his second full practice since coach Tom Cable picked him to replace Jason Campbell as the Raiders' starter.

The promotion capped a 10-month stretch during which Gradkowski suffered two season-ending knee injuries, tore a pectoral muscle, then watched as Oakland cut former No. 1 overall draft pick JaMarcus Russell, traded for Campbell and immediately named him the starter on the eve of training camp.

Despite receiving reassurance from Cable otherwise, Gradkowski isn't taking anything for granted.

"No matter what Coach said, you just never know," Gradkowski said. "Winning's the name of the game, and if I'm not getting it done, I'm sure he's going to try to find someone else who will. You just have to respect that."

It's the quickest non-injury-related quarterback change the Raiders have made since returning to Northern California in 1995. Aaron Brooks was replaced by Andrew Walter in Week 2 during the 2006 season after injuring his throwing shoulder.

This is nothing new to Gradkowski. He came off the bench to replace Russell midway through last season and led the Raiders to wins over the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers in his first three starts before suffering the season-ending knee injuries in Week 14.

That made Gradkowski somewhat of a folk hero in Oakland, where fans had grown bitter because of Russell's poor performances and lackadaisical attitude. In four starts, Gradkowski passed for 844 yards and six touchdowns with one interception. His 89.7 passer rating as a starter was easily tops among the three quarterbacks Oakland used last season.

Just as quickly as his popularity with the Raiders was taking off, Gradkowski was injured. The misfortune continued during the offseason when Gradkowski tore a pec muscle while lifting weights, shelving him for most of the Raiders' offseason workouts.

That was followed by a groin injury, suffered early in camp, that cost Gradkowski two weeks, giving Oakland more reason to go with Campbell as the starter.

"Last year was last year, and you've got to get it done this year," Gradkowski said. "Coach Cable sat us down and told us the news, and I was excited. But the excitement ends right there. I really haven't done nothing, in my mind."

While Gradkowski answered questions about the quarterback change at a podium adjacent to one of the team's three practice fields, Campbell politely declined to be interviewed when approached inside the Raiders' locker room.

"I can't talk to you guys," Campbell said. "I would, but (the Raiders) asked me not to."

Campbell, whom Raiders owner Al Davis compared to two-time Super Bowl winner Jim Plunkett shortly after the April trade with the Washington Redskins, has a 61.9 completion percentage this season, but he passed for just 267 yards and led only one touchdown drive in 1½ games. He also was sacked six times, a key issue given Oakland's pass-protection problems.

Cable cited the energy that Gradkowski brought to the Raiders' huddle as a factor in making the change and said the quarterback's handling of his own health issues over the last year increased his popularity in the locker room.

"What it does more than anything, it earns the respect of your teammates, to battle through all those things and still stand tall," Cable said. "He didn't panic. He was very disappointed ... but the thing about Bruce is whatever curveball you throw at him, he just takes it and keeps pushing."

Notes: The Raiders added rookie Quentin Scott and re-signed S Stevie Brown to their practice squad. To make room, they cut LB Slade Norris. ... LG Robert Gallery (hamstring) didn't practice and is questionable to play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, Cable said. WR Chaz Schilens (foot), LB Travis Goethel (back) and DT John Henderson (foot) also are questionable. S Michael Huff (headache) was limited, but RB Michael Bush (broken thumb) and DT Richard Seymour (hamstring) didn't have any restrictions

I think Gradkowski gives the Raiders the best chance to win right now... I don't know too much about him, but what I saw from him last year, and this year against the 9ers in preseason, he looks like a good QB and the way Campbell was performing so far it seems like Bruce is the best choice for the Raiders right now.

All the shit talking aside between 9er and Raider fans, I hope yall beat the Cardinals and the Seahawks this year... I'll be happy if yall go 3-1 verse the NFC West. I'm sure Raider fans want the 9ers to go 3-1 vs. the AFC West too

The only game I will be rooting against the Raiders, is the one on October 17th, other than that.. best of luck

I didn't even know there was a "rivalry" with the niners until I started posting here. all the niner fans I work with have zero hate for the raiders. back when I lived in cali, I only knew one niner fan(one of my uncles) and he never had a bad thing to say about the raiders either.

I think actually living in the Bay has something to do with it

almost everyone I know is either a Raiders or Niners fan (with the exception of some Cowboys and Steelers fans here and there)... so talking shit is natural

Raiders-Cardinals Preview

By NOEY KUPCHAN,
STATS Writer

(AP) -- Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable hoped to avoid a controversy after replacing his quarterback in the middle of last week's game. He may have done so by declaring a new starter.

The visiting Raiders will turn to Bruce Gradkowski as they try to win two in a row for the first time in nearly two years Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

Oakland acquired Jason Campbell from Washington in the offseason and he went 22 of 37 for 180 yards, a touchdown and an interception in a 38-13 season-opening loss at Tennessee.

In Week 2, Cable pulled Campbell at halftime as the Raiders trailed St. Louis 7-3 at home. Gradkowski came in and led the team to 13 second-half points as Oakland escaped with a 16-14 win.

"The reasons are pretty simple," Cable said. "First and foremost is the energy and the level of intensity that was brought into the huddle when he came into the game. The way the guys responded around him. And obviously scoring points. ... That's what we're about. If we can get this thing to where we can score 24 points a game, I think we'll be very tough to beat."

Cable said owner Al Davis was not involved in the decision.

"When we did it, obviously it was the right decision, it worked, and then as we talked about it here the last couple of days and came to a decision this morning," Cable said. "Again, we've made it and there's no issues or controversies or anything like that. The decision's been made."

Gradkowski was 11 of 22 and threw for 162 yards with a TD and an interception against the Rams. He went 2-2 as the starter for Oakland last season.

One of the biggest differences between the two quarterbacks is Campbell's inability to escape the sack. He went down six times in 52 pass attempts, while Gradkowski is able to move around in the pocket.

"He finds ways to make plays. He has guys in his face, getting hit, put on his back but he's still getting the ball out," tight end Zach Miller said. "Even if he's just throwing it away, he's saving us sacks. He's really able to make plays under pressure and find a way to get first downs. It's a good quality in a quarterback."

The Raiders have established one of the NFL's most potent running attacks this year, which should take some of the pressure off Gradkowski.

Oakland is third in the league with 154.5 rushing yards per game, huge progress for a team that averaged 106.3 in 2009.

Darren McFadden has been the main reason for the improvement, rushing 48 times for 240 yards, the second-highest total in the NFL. He ran for 145 yards on a career-high 30 carries against the Rams.

McFadden could be in for another big day, as Arizona is allowing the second-most rushing yards in the league with 153.0 per game. The Cardinals (1-1) surrendered 221 yards on the ground in a 41-7 loss at Atlanta last Sunday.

While Oakland has succeeded in handing the ball off, it has had trouble stopping the run, allowing 140.0 yards per game. It will now face Tim Hightower, who rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown against the Falcons and leads all running backs with an average of 7.0 yards per attempt.

He has been the focal point of the offense with quarterback Derek Anderson struggling with his accuracy. Anderson was 17 of 31 for 161 yards and two interceptions last Sunday as Arizona suffered its worst loss since falling 47-7 at New England on Dec. 21, 2008.

"The players are embarrassed and hurt and ready to get after Oakland and get that bad game out of our system," defensive coordinator Bill Davis said. "But we own it. It snuck up on us. It happened and now we have to respond to it."

Hightower has stepped in for the injured Beanie Wells, who hasn't played since suffering a bruised knee in the final preseason game. Wells went through much more of practice Thursday, increasing the probability that he will play Sunday.

"It was terrible (sitting out)," Wells told the Cardinals' official site. "I wanted to be out there with the guys. Seeing Tim last week (with 115 yards rushing) gave me extra motivation."

Oakland, which hasn't won two in a row since ending 2008 with a pair of victories, is 5-2 against the Cardinals. The Raiders won 22-9 on Oct. 22, 2006, in the previous meeting.
