Getting ready to head out the door to the first 49ers' State of the Franchise evening in San Mateo . . .

when I received this email from the Denver Broncos:

The club released defensive end John Engelberger, tight end Nate Jackson, linebacker Niko Koutouvides, safety Marquand Manuel, defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson and linebacker Jamie Winborn.

BRONCOS BOUNCE SIX
Posted by Mike Florio on February 16, 2009, 8:50 p.m.

The Denver Broncos have announced the release of six player who were acquired during the Mike Shanahan era.

Gone are defensive end John Engelberger, tight end Nate Jackson, linebacker Niko Koutouvides, safety Marquand Manuel, defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson, and linebacker Jamie Winborn.

Engleberger has been acquired via trade with the 49ers in 2005. Jackson also came in a trade with San Fran, circa 2003.

Koutovides arrived last year via free agency from the Seahawks. Ditto for Manuel, but from the Panthers.

The Broncos traded for Roberston, the fourth overall pick in the 2003 draft, last year. Winborn was signed as a free agent in 2007.

The moves clear $6.425 million in 2009 salary commitments.

Per the Associated Press, Robertson was scheduled to have a cap figure of $16 million, even though according to NFLPA records his base salary was due to be only $900,000.

LIONS PAY PETERMAN
Posted by Mike Florio on February 16, 2009, 4:51 p.m.

The football equivalent of the urban sombrero is spending money in an effort to keep some of the guys who contributed to that memorable (for all the wrong reasons) winless season.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, the Detroit Lions have re-signed guard Stephen Peterman.

It’s a five-year, $15 million deal, with $5.5 million in guaranteed money.

Peterman, a third-round pick (of the Cowboys) in 2004, has 29 career starts. He started 13 games in 2007, and 14 in 2008.

BENGALS TAG SHAYNE GRAHAM
Posted by Mike Florio on February 16, 2009, 2:56 p.m.

The Cincinnati Bengals have announced that they have placed the franchise tag on kicker Shayne Graham.

“Shayne has consistently performed at a high level for us, and we expect that same performance in 2009 and hopefully beyond,” said Bengals coach Marvin Lewis in a team-issued release. “We’ll continue to speak with Shayne and his representatives about signing a longer-term deal.”

The move means that all other Bengals free agents — including receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, running back Cedric Benson, and tackle Stacy Andrews — will hit the market at midnight on February 27, 2009.

To franchise Graham, the Bengals are required to tender Graham a one-year deal worth $2.483 million.

A league source confirms for us that the Jacksonville Jaguars will be releasing on Monday veteran running back Fred Taylor.

We chased this one after receiving a tip via e-mail from a reader who said our friends at 1010XL in Jacksonville are reporting that the team will announce the move later today at a press conference.

Taylor, a first-round pick of the Jags in 1998, was due to receive a base salary of $5 million in 2009, and $6 million in 2010.

Taylor has rushed for 11,271 yards on 264 2,428 carries, good for an average of 4.6 yards.

He instantly becomes an unrestricted free agent, and he can sign with any team.

housh going to see the freemarket...good look...hes an aging talent and could be picked up for a short term fix...

id like the titans to make a play for em but it wont happen..i wish we could get Bo back but thats unlikely..

haynes is good as gone....

Rob Bironas may be tagged...i think there working on a contract...

this is the biggest FA for the titans in quite sometime...they need to make moves to stay a contender...we are losing a lot of key players...

thought i'd quote one of the better lines i've seen on this site. only the steelers can boast to be superior to any other team in the league at this time. free agent only talk from this point forward.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are intent on retaining unrestricted free agent cornerback Phillip Buchanon to bolster their secondary, according to Pro Football Weekly.

While the Buccaneers may use the franchise tag to hold onto free agent wide receiver Antonio Bryant, they’d like to lock up Buchanon’s services with a contract extension. That organizational desire was described as a “high priority” for new General Manager Mark Dominik.

While last year’s first-round draft pick, cornerback Aqib Talib, intercepted four passes as a rookie and seems to have a bright future, the Buccaneers are reportedly concerned that veteran starting cornerback Ronde Barber’s play is beginning to slip.

According to a source cited by Pro Football Weekly, Barber may play a less significant part in the defense next year as he heads into his 13th NFL season.

The St. Petersburg Times reported last March that the Buccaneers had broached the prospect of a hammering out a contract extension with Buchanon. Per NFL.com, he registered 52 tackles and two interceptions with one touchdown last season.

The Cardinals are expected to hit linebacker Karlos Dansby with the franchise tag, according to NFL Network’s Adam Schefter.

The move would pay Dansby $9.6 million and prevent him from becoming a free agent next week.

Earlier this month, Dansby said he “wouldn’t mind playing in a huge market” but it doesn’t look he’ll get that chance.

Dansby, 27, has spent all five of his NFL seasons in Arizona, since the Cardinals drafted him in the second round of the 2004 draft. He had four sacks, two interceptions and a pair of forced fumbles in 2008.

As Schefter points out, franchising Dansby would mean the Cardinals can’t use the tag on Kurt Warner, which was also considered a possibility.
