Monta on the comeback trail

OAKLAND — Warriors guard Monta Ellis was at the team's practice facility Tuesday afternoon for the first time in more than three weeks as he began on-site rehabilitation of his injured left ankle.

Ellis worked out on an elliptical trainer, which he had been using since late last month, as he watched some of Tuesday's practice. According to a team spokesman, his return to on-court drills will depend on how well his ankle progresses during the on-site rehab. No timetable has been set.

Ellis left the facility without speaking to the media, but his teammates were glad to have him around.

"You can see the fire in his eyes that he really wants to practice with us and play. He really misses basketball," center Andris Biedrins said. "I think he'll be really happy when he comes back."

Ellis is eligible to return to action Dec. 19 in Atlanta, but he'll likely need more time to get back into game shape. Ellis tore ligaments in his ankle during an offseason moped accident weeks after signing a five-year, $66 million contract. He had surgery Aug. 27 and had the screws removed from his ankle Nov. 19. The Warriors suspended him for 30 games — four exhibition games and the first 26 of the regular season — for violating terms of his contract by riding the moped.

Heres a video of Monta on a stairmaster. (He's the one in the backround on the equipment.)
