KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)—A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that the Kansas City Chiefs have claimed former Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton(notes) off waivers.

The person spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the Chiefs had not announced the move. Coach Todd Haley declined to discuss Orton when asked about him earlier in the day.

Kansas City was in the market for a veteran quarterback after Matt Cassel(notes) went down with a season-ending injury to his throwing hand. Orton became available when the Broncos waived him Tuesday.

The former Chicago Bears starter, who passed for more than 3,000 yards each of his first two seasons in Denver, was benched six weeks ago after getting off to a 1-4 start. The Broncos eventually decided to go with Tim Tebow(notes) as the starter, making Orton expendable.

He throws the ball better than Cassel but I don't know if it's his decision-making or what else that keeps him from contributing to winning. But this is a band-aid i believe cuz we aint goin to the playoffs. Or Pioli want a compensatory pick if he leaves.

Good pick up for the chiefs. Better than what they had for sure. As a raiders fan I'm not happy about it, but I'm still not too worried about the chiefs

they're not starting him yet. they saw firsthand what happened to us when we started Palmer too early... but shit, might as well. Palko sucks and you know they're gonna lose anyways

Chiefs defense is playing solid though. With a better QB and Jamaal Charles back, Chiefs should be a good again. this year just aint your year

Its time for us to try and grab a QBOTF with the high pick we'll have. I personally hope we play lights out the rest of the season but still lose the games...lol

This is our chance to grab one.

actually there's only one Donko fan who posts pretty consistently, and that's scary 1. but the funny thing is he's been posting less since the donkos have been winning
