ANTIOCH, Calif. -- An Antioch police officer suffered serious injuries early Tuesday when he lost control of his vehicle during a high-speed chase and careened through a garage, authorities said.
According to Antioch police, the pursuit began around 11:20 p.m. on San Jose Ave. near the Pittsburg-Antioch border. An officer had spotted a wanted parolee -- David Cole -- at the wheel of the car and ran the vehicle’s plates.
When the plates did not match car, the officer attempted to pull Cole over. But the parolee fled at a high rate of speed and the chase began.
A second officer – a 6-year veteran of the Antioch police -- joined the pursuit. About 4-5 miles into the chase near the intersection of West Leyland Drive and William Way, that officer lost control of his car. It careened into a fence and then into a garage and house.
The four people inside the house were not hurt, but the officer suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.
He was transported to John Muir Hospital, but his condition was unknown.
"Well I heard the car, the sirens and a car speeding off," neighbor Peter Rios told KTVU. "I heard the crash. I went outside, saw the other police cars and thought, 'What's going on?'"
The chase continued through Walnut Creek and then Concord and back into Antioch. At that point, Cole drove into an apartment complex and became trapped. He bolted from the car and attempted to hide in some bushes, but was flushed out by a police dog. He was then arrested.
Cole faces charges for the chase and an outstanding warrant for car theft.
