OAKLAND (BCN) ― Oakland police said Thursday Lt. Derrick Norfleet, 45, committed suicide at his home in Vallejo on Wednesday morning.
Police spokesman Sgt. Roland Holmgren said in a statement, "The Oakland Police Department along with many friends and family members suffered an extreme loss" with the death of Norfleet.
Holmgren said, "Lt. Norfleet's ever-present smile will be missed by many, especially the family he left behind."
According to Holmgren, Norfleet was assigned to the patrol division and had been with the department for more than 22 years.
Police Chief Wayne Tucker said in a statement, "The sudden loss of Lt. Norfleet is a shock to the department and the citizens of Oakland. He was a valuable member of our team and will be missed. Our prayers and thought will be with his family."
Holmgren said Norfleet's family members have arrived from as far away as Texas to attend funeral services that will be held Aug. 7. The location hasn't yet been determined.
According to Holmgren, Norfleet rose to the rank of lieutenant after working in various assignments in the department, such as patrol and the criminal investigations division.
Holmgren said Norfleet was president of the Oakland Black Police Officers' Association and described him as "steadfast in his efforts to bring peace to the citizens of Oakland and rid the city of crime and violence."
