I think a lot of people out here try to sound like everyone else just to get air play and or recognition. The northwest needs someone that has their own personality that doesn't act like every other punk ass industry rapper or sound like them. The NW had a good sound and still does, but I think the "best" artists were on SLR (Notes, COLA, Crytical)....Other than that the shit I hear on the radio from the NW (except a couple people) sounds like every other gay ass mainstream song out there. Nobody is doing shit with originality or individualism. Neema's album did that, but that's about it. And honestly, a few of his songs sound like the normal mainstream stuff that I don't like listening to. But at least he makes up for it with good songs, most other artists don't/can't do that.
Someone needs to get the right backing out here and actually do something for themself/the region. Seems like most people are STILL too busy hating on people that could help them out. Maybe in time people will realize that acting like bitches only decreases your chances of doing something productive. I guess we'll see.
Alot of people don't understand that without radio or video, knowone from the NW will blowup. The only person that has been able to break the mold and be successful was Kanye West, and his situation was unique in the sense that he was with the Roc and was working with and being endorsed by Jay Z. Yes, the NW has it's own sound, but radio has it's own idea of what they would like to play. It will take a hit for the NW to blowup, and the music will have to be consistent with what is already on the radio.
It's no different then cars. When Benz's and 22's are in style, knowone is looking at the dude with fly Acura with 18's on it. This also applies to what it takes to take something to the next level. Success is bigger then the NW, and it means getting spins in Houston, NY, Memphis, St Louis, LA, Chicago, and places all over the country. Most artists in the NW have never went outside the NW, and haven't gotten a chance to really see how the REAL record industry works. Either your going to be a mainstream success(MTV, BET, selling out the Showbox, selling out the Paramount, The Source, and XXL), or your going to be an underground success(Murderdog, Showcase, doing shows in Tacoma, Spokane, Olympia, Boise, and playing 200+ capacity venues). This is the reality of it all.
Understand how the game works and why people are doing certain things before you have all of these comments about why people are doing certain things. The music industry knows what it wants, and has a system set up, and you are either going to go with it, or go against it. It all applies to The Bay(Hyphy or Thizz), The South(Crunk or Swishahouse), The East Coast(Gully), and The Midwest. They all have their sound, and the people in that region support that sound, and the artists in that region are striving the be the Hyphyest, Thizzed, Crunked, Screwed, Gully, and whatever else they can be to be successful at creating the next hot song.
The NW is suffering from people that aren't looking at the music business from a reality based view. Get out and work and see if people in different areas even feel what you are doing. The game will continue to pass the NW up, and we will still be sitting here looking stupid blaming it on everyone else, and talking about the Great Hip-Hop Hopes of the NW, and who is going to carry the torch and take us all to the top.
You can have the biggest financial backer ever, but if the music is bullshit and not relevant to what is on the radio or video, then the shit is going to flop. I can make examples of this exact scenario, but I'm not trying to sound like a hater. Good music is what it's going to take people, and shit that people all across the country can feel. Not just some NE Portland, Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, Bellevue, Eugene, and other NW cities hip-hop, but some nationwide shit.
You make the choice: Mainstream or Underground.
