The real question is, do people really understand just how DRY the market is right now. I know of artist whose releases have only sold 500 Soundscan (And these are known artists)

That is a trip. I think the trouble is that there has to be such a BIG promo campaign that it gets over the budget of most indies. I think my group can top 10k units. It's gonna take a lot of work, hustlin, marketing and promo, but I think we can pull it off. (everybody thinks that about their own stuff).

I think there is still a market for this music. In fact, I think tyhe market is MORE able tosupport it than before. All the little kids 8 years ago are now adults with the money to BUY albums.

Are there any new groups out there that people think COULD sell 10k or more units.

I also would like someone to break down "everything must be done perfect"

Lastly, I promised a link to music. Here's a link that shows what an artist came into the PaperTrail studio with. He brought in his Dat tape.Remember, he'd broke big bread to get this done. He dropped it off and came back the next day. Dj SHam had tinkered with it untilhe turned it into something with a PaperTrail sound. I think you will notice the difference. Even though he made the song years ago, we decided to put it on the upcoming comp.

I just dont understand why artists spend so much money on bad production just because they have a big name. If I were an artist I'd be running away from some studios and running TOO some of the smaller, unknown ones that make great music.

Solitary: Kobe is doing well. He has come a looooong way since he first walked in. His voice is more relaxed, easier to understand. Now he fucks the beat instead of kissin it.
Even though he is a raw artist, he is a joy to work with and work for because he is always prepared and doesn't bull-shit. He may miss a meeting every now and then, but he doesn't make excuses and rarely makes the same mistake twice... on the mic or otherwise.

We got some lil monsters man. Between he and Big Mel, these guys are like Gorillas in a glass house. Big brute ass niggas. But yeah, he's doing well. I just can't get over how that tape sounded when he first brought it in. I could link 3 more just like it and you'd be like....DAMN! Why are people payin G's for booty ass production. Shit, everybody has dreams but you gotta lace it with common sense. If the SHIT IS WEAK, stop going to that studio/producer.
At least I give Kobe credit for taking a chance on a group that wasn't ballin outta control. We are regular cats. Grown men who been through a few things. But we make good music. He'll get his reward, though. It looks like his will be the first solo project released after the comp. It's already finished and he is on pins and needles. The album is... you just have to hear it. The songs that are on the comp (except for Get the Money) were not his favorites . He has a song called "The Way of Life" that is the best mobb song I have heard from an artist in years. I am not happy with the beat, though. Sham can do better (and he knows it). I told SHam the beat was getting outdone by the lyrics and his response to me was,
"Kobe liked that beat so I let him rap to it. But now that he is done with the lyrics...it's my turn. Now I get to put my fingers on it and create."

When alls said in done, Kobe (aka Detrimental) will be successful. I don't know how much of an audience or market there is for hardcore gangsta rap, but we are soon gonna find out. If he doesn't do well... then I just don't know what the fuck it will take. The reason Eminem is popular is because he is real. He talks about what he knows, not what he has heard. That is the key to passion in his music and voice and it is that passion that sells. People can relate to truth in music. You can just feel it. Other people have better deliveries... but the heart is missing from music nowadays and that is still what people want.

Lyric from "Way of Life"

"It all started when I was 12 years old wit no guidance
I didn't have no father, but I did have my potnas.
So we started us a lil gang
From a street named Wall Street
They called us the 'Walnuts' n'
One eat we all eat n'
One beef we all beef"

Hook:
"For some it's a dream, for me its a way of life
I talk about the real shit thats goin on day & Night
GIve it to you raw in the cut, how I grew up
On the south side of Richmond Killafonia, NIGGA WHAT"

I very rarely pump a song up as being anything special, but when Sham finishes with this one.... its over.
