The San Francisco 49ers announced Wednesday they have traded WR Rashaun Woods to the San Diego Chargers in exchange for three-year NFL veteran CB Sammy Davis.

Davis, (6-0, 195), originally joined San Diego as a first-round draft pick out of Texas A&M in 2003. Davis has started in 30 of 44 NFL games and has accumulated 122 total tackles, three interceptions, one sack and 20 passes defensed during his three-year career in San Diego. San Diego utilized Davis as a right corner as well as a nickel corner.

“This was an opportunity for us to strengthen ourselves at a position of need with a proven NFL starter,” said head coach Mike Nolan on the trade. “After strengthening the wide receiver position with the addition of free agents Antonio Bryant and Bryan Gilmore, we felt it was important to focus on other areas to improve our team. Davis will be able to step in from day one and challenge for a starting role.”

Woods originally joined the 49ers as a first-round draft pick in 2004 out of Oklahoma State. He spent the majority of last season on injured reserve with a thumb injury that occurred during practice.

sammy davis is a liability on defense. he lost his starting job and really has never amounted to nothing.....
You're on the money... the Niners signed a scrub

They probably don't want to look too hard at their defensive backfield. The young corners got torched. Though he's been sidelined, it is no travesty to get burned by Smith, the NFL's most prolific receiver the past seven years. But when journeyman Matt Hatchette catches an open 45-yard pass that makes Sammy Davis Jr., the first-round draft pick, look like Sammy Davis Jr., the Candyman, it's clear there is trouble.

And another one...
The Chargers are finding it harder and harder to tap dance around the play of cornerback Sammy Davis.

Already forced to share time with Jamar Fletcher, Davis let Peerless Price get wide open for a 50-yard completion on Sunday that helped the Atlanta Falcons rally from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter for a 21-20 victory.

The cornerback with the Hollywood name, who sometimes plays more like Mr. Bojangles than a former first-round draft pick, could have his playing time cut even more when the Chargers (3-3) play at Carolina on Sunday.

"When they find you at corner, they're going to look to try to take advantage of you," coach Marty Schottenheimer said Monday. "I'm going to have to look at it even more closely because we've got to play better there."

Three plays after Price beat Davis, Michael Vick scored on a 14-yard run to pull the Falcons to 17-14.

LOL... where are the Castro boys?

A good move to provide depth? He's going to be challenging for a starting role. That's more than depth....

The man sucks at covering people...
Man he can't even do that... See my previous posts... he left people wide open... uncovered! For a 45 yard completion and a 50 yard completion... which tells me he's dumb. He blows coverages... that's why Marty got rid of him. And now the Niners got him and talking all big about him. "Proven NFL starter"..... "challenge for a starting position"..... Get out of here with all that... Sammy Davis Jr.? LOL!!! The Niners are funny man...
