That's a pretty good article... Yes the risk is high but you gotta do what you gotta do. And if he's judging by this:

Conclusions

If history tells us anything, either Brady Quinn or JaMarcus Russell will be an abject failure at the next level. And it seemed like our metrics -- games played and TD/INT ratio -- were pretty accurate. To survive in the league at QB, you must make wise decisions with the football. To thrive, like many of our multiple Pro Bowl QBs, a 2/1 TD/INT ratio is standard."

Then Alex Smith is a bust (so far)

Tony, serioulsy get the fuck off Alex Smith, I am far from a Niner fan but it's fuckin retarded how you keep bringing him up!

How many times have I and plenty of other posters here tell you it takes 3 years to figure out how a qb is going to be, he has only had 1 and a half years of playing time.

You think Smith is bad right now, wait until you see your beloved Russell this upcoming season...bwhahahaha

Contradiction... double standard! Upcoming season? I thought it takes 3 years to figure out if a qb is going to be a bust...

But I guess Russell is going to be judged on this upcoming season right?

Thats what I am saying I am doing just what you are! You like to call a bust a bust in year 2....by your standars Russell will be too

I'd call any qb a bust if he threw 1 TD pass versus 11 INT's I don't care who he is. That's terrible... but I agreed with everyone that brought up the point that it takes a few seasons to tell if the qb is a bust or not. So even if the Raiders did draft Russell or Quinn and they put up stinkin' numbers similar to Alex's... then we should apply those same "it takes a few seasons to tell" standards to Russell, Quinn or whoever the Raiders choose to draft. I was just saying if we're judging by the authors standards then Smith is on his way to being a bust. This is year 3 for him. He's gotta improve his INT to TD ratio or turn that ratio into a TD to INT ratio.

Compare Alex Smith's first season statitics to Jay Cutler's then holla at me.

Oh and by the way... Al Davis is pretty pissed that they passed on Leinart last year. He says it was Art's decision to pass on a qb and draft Huff. You think he's going to pass on another qb that has the potential to be a franchise qb?

Mike Shannahan wasn't trippin off of the risk of drafting a qb in the first round. He even traded up to get Cutler.... and so far that gamble has paid off. That's why your beloved Plummer (the qb that wins games all by himself) got sent packing!

Interesting study, I wish they would factor in all other rounds either, but I'm sure NFL teams have that information. Thanks for posting that up here.

I'm working on a similar project right now at work (but for the Major League Baseball Draft).

How are you going to compare a team that almost made the playoffs with to a 4-12 team .........

Javon Walker & Rod Smith > Johnie Morton & Brandon Lloyd..............

thats a HORRIBLE comparison..........

Yeah they were pretty bad... but no excuses.
Uhhh...thats a perfectly reliable excuse.

For a QB and a WR to be successful, they NEED eachother. How can a QB have a god year if his recievers cant run routes? Cant catch balls? Dont make better efforts to make tough grabs?

How can a WR be good if his QB cant trhwo the ball near him? Doesnt have good timing on deep routes? Doesnt have very good arm strentgh? Has an inaccurate arm? Doesnt make wise decisions?

Tony, just stop. Please, for the love of this board....STOP.

^^that's Tony's game. When you call him out (like everyone else) he comes with some bullshit like "Why do you cry" or "Someone's feeling's got hurt" when in fact neither are true. It's called not having a real argument! Or talking out of your ass..

Hey thascary 1 don't get mad now... I just cut and pasted this:

Of the past 11 quarterbacks selected No. 1 overall, nine have led their respective teams to the playoffs. The only exceptions, so far, are David Carr (Houston, 2002) and Alex Smith (San Francisco, 2005).

Point being? who are the other 9? do you honestly believe Russell in their category?
