Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - San Francisco 49ers center Jeremy Newberry will undergo knee surgery Tuesday and will be out for several weeks.
The two-time Pro Bowl center missed practice Thursday for the second consecutive day with pain underneath his kneecap. He had arthroscopic surgery August 10 to remove cartilage from the same area.
"We have been treating the injury to Jeremy's right knee since the beginning of training camp," said Dr. Michael Dillingham. "Initially, the pain subsided through rehab. As his workload increased through practice and playing, the pain returned and became too severe. Jeremy does not feel he can play at a high enough level to help the team.
"He will undergo surgery Tuesday to release excess pressure from his kneecap," Dillingham continued. "We cannot put a timetable on this but we will begin rehab as soon as possible and hope to have him back sometime this season."
Newberry started all 16 games last season with a completely torn ligament in his left ankle. He underwent reconstructive surgery on the ankle in January, and didn't practice with the team again until training camp began in July.
The seven-year veteran developed the cartilage problem in his knee, and had surgery in August to start last week's season opener against Atlanta.
Newberry has missed just one game in the past five seasons despite playing with various significant injuries.
Eight-year veteran Brock Gutierrez is expected to take Newberry's place in the starting lineup.
