the original mp3 itself is 96k...you could have converted to a wav file and it wouldn't have any effect on the sound quality.

wav would of been too big and as for the sound quality why does my rip sound a lot better than the one dl off myspace??? I recorded it live and boosted the volume and besides that mine sounds stereo and 96 sounds more mono.

i use mp3gopher...instead of "capturing" the stream it saves the streaming file temporarily and then reconstructs the data...the end result is an exact copy of the mp3 that was uploaded.

your can make it sound better by normalizing it or deleting hiss with audio software, but you'll never get the higher end frequencies that are lost when the song was originally encoded as a 96kbps mp3. data is lost when it's compressed from the original wav...you can't make that data appear out of nowhere. higher average VBR's files or high CBR files just end up wasting extra space.
