I'm sure you have a whole laundry list of items to customize to get the board back to the way you like, but I do have one suggestion to consider...

Disable the requirment to click a quick reply button to use the quick reply box at the bottom of the page. It screws up the threaded view, but on a board that's been around as long as this one without a threaded view, most users won't be interested in using that anyway.
