After lsitening again..maybe put the phased piano on bars 12 through 16 right before the hook....then try something else to fill the rest of the track....maybe a pad or just a simple chord or two of a Rhodes or something...

Aight check this shit out. I revised it a bit. Changed the electric piano wah wah shit to a regular piano, gives the track a bit more energy than before. I also completely changed the bassline and made it a bit longer than before so it follows the rhythm better. I probably could have added in another element like you said, but I got lazy. haha Sounds good though I think, definitely one of my better beats. It actually sounds like music.

I really want to get better at making basslines though. I have a lot of trouble playing them on the keyboard. I need to bang something, like how a real bass-ist slaps that shit. How do MPC style drum pads work in this situation?

yeah i like this one a lil better. Remember though that if this is a beat for soemeone to rap to it cant be congested...I do the same thang cause I aint trippn on anyone ever rapping so i fill more stuff in...Also doning bass line son an mpc can be done and there are certain techniques, but not really geared to the basslines that we are trying to get.I beleive that when we sit down at the keyboard and compose..we may have different ideas, but we have what i call muscle memory wich makes us hit notes at a certain way..just like some people who aint got no rhythm dancing..even if they learn some steps they look funny?...Well when you sit don to make a beat next time hit the keys different..bounce wit it with your tips//hit a lil harder..or lighter for shorter or longer..or pull up a bass patch and play the black keys and put your two fingers on the black keys that are grouped in two and justroll your fingers from 1 to 2 and see what i mean?

Nah man ain't no one going to rap to it. Maybe in the future, but not right now. I just like filling it in like you said, making that shit musical like a jazz track. I can give a fuck about vocals at this point.

As far as making the basslines, yeah I know what you mean, but it still seems a bit hard, especially for the white keys. I have to keep re-recording it till I get it perfect or edit the midi notes by hand in the piano roll. I guess I have to work more on my coordination as well. I actually can play the black keys a lot easier because they pop-out unlike the flat white keys, I slap them with my fingers (usually with my index/middle fingers). Sometimes I also just use the QWERTY PC keyboard and use it as my midi keyboard, for some reason I can jam on it better. Thanks

bad habit and really bad habit....I mostly use all black keys,I play from ear like you as well...maybe cause i sat and watched my boy Raw make a grip of beats and see how he has certain rythm hitting them black keys..i just try and emulate certain aspects.....I need to incorporate a few more white notes...but there are plenty black ones..yeah dont quantize your basslines (as a rule) and dont edit like that...your a musician..let it flow...and experiment on a descent keyboard...not no small midi controller...I like My jp8000 I also like to use the joystick for pitch bend...

at 3:07 to 4:07 i have a bassline, piano and clav..see what the pitch bed does to the clav...wich can be applied to bass..i like joysticks oppose to modulation wheels.

Thanks for the tips, I'll keep that in mind. I'm surprised you only use the Black keys. For only being black keys, all your shit sounds dope. I will admit I do have an easier time playing with the black keys. Like I said, I find them easier to press and or slap, since they pop out. Maybe you do too. I got an Axiom 49, which ain't too bad in size.

As far as your beat goes, that shit definitely sounds DOPE. It's funky as fuck, I'll tell you that. That clav does sound good.

BTW, I'm sorry, but I made a little quick remix of your beat (the 3:07 to 4:07 one). lol I was just fucking around. Sounds cool I think, uptempo-ish. Shit slaps, haha.
