A-Wax Interview by John von Gruner for www.5150-Remaq.com
John: Wassup Wax…how ya doin, man?
A-Wax: I`m doin great yo,thanks for asking.
J: Introduce yourself real quick, in case some readers still don’t know who you are
A: My name is A-Wax but my podnaz call me Wax Fase.
J: What was it like growing up in Pittsburg, CA?
A: It was poverty. It was d-boy role models & million dollar dreamz.
J: When did u first start rapping and who were your influences?
A: I first started rappin` in Monroe (Washington State Reformatory) at age 17 thanks to J Prince family Kev Prince who laced me on the studio get down.We had a four track & Boss Dr.Rythym, spittin` in a bootsy mic .At the time my influences were Dre dog,Spice-1,C-Bo,Pac,Dayton Family,C.I.N.,Lynch ,Biggie, Bone Thugs,Young Dre ,E-40, Ghetto Boys,Yukmouth, U.G.K., Nas..
J: I know from listening to your songs that you had various run-ins with the law and got locked up in the past…Tell us a little something about your prison-career, playa.
A: I was arrested in 1995 for Murder. My co-d was snitchin` & my dog rob blew trial & got 40 years so I plead guilty to 1st degree manslaughter for 78 months no snitchin` involved.Juvinile declined jurisdiction on me & i was sent straight to prison.Did 4 years 10 months on that.
J: You released your first Album “Savage Timez” in 2001….with guest appearances by Woodie, Rydah J Klyde, Kunyva and some others…Is that the same Kunyva who shot his promoter a few months back? (if its him)How you feelin about that?
A: Same Kunyva.I feel it`s unfortunate for everyone in that situation.
J: The second Album “65Gz in a Jordan Briefcase” dropped a year later and is already labeled a classic Bay Area Album and in my opinion bay rap fans started to recognize your talent after they heard that album (correct me if I’m wrong)…Would you say that this album opened alotta doors for you?
A: I wouldn`t disagree with that statement. That album cemented me in here.
J: Most songs on 65Gz were mixed by Bay Legend Lev Berlak…In the credits he was called Lev “The Bitch” Berlak tho …. I know many people still wonder why that happened..so please let em know
A: Lev called Possi production’s C.E.O. Gabe a bitch to his fase @ the grill & Gabe put that in my album credits as a form of retaliation. It was sucka shit like this wich lead to my departure from that label.
J: You were first featured on Baby Beesh’s Get Wiggy Compilation and later on his Universal Music debut album The Smokin Nephewhow did u first hook up with Beesh ?
A: Steve Diddy hooked us up(his picture is inside of the Smokin` Nephew c.d.,the mexican cat) Free Diddy!!!
J: The Smokin Nephew album went platinum…Did u already get your platinum plaque for bein featured on this CD?
A: Naw...I been meanin` to get my plaque though! I gotta pay for it cause Universal is petty, unless it`s on the way my $
J: You recently released the compilation..So Quick..like a Heist…featuring Baby Bash, SPM, Terror Squad… how is that album doing sales wise? And wasn’t it supposed to be Baby Bash & A-Wax present..So Quick like a Heist?
A: It is still a Baby Bash & A-Wax presents...Album sold around 6 thousand units with no distribution or promotion.
J: You got your own label called Pie-Rx Records…who besides you is signed to the label?
A: tha B.O.K
J: Out of all the CDs u released so far, which one is your personal favorite?
A: Conceptz&Contradictionz
J: Your newest Album Thug Deluxe is set to be released very soon..what can we expect from that album? Who made the Beats and who is featured on it?
A: Lev does all the beats & it features G-Unit`s The Game.
J: What else can we expect from Pie-RX Records in 2005?
A: A-Wax Unconditional Thug album coming early `05.
J: I talked to Baby Bash a while ago and he told me live on German Radio that A-Wax is the next Bay Artist to blow up on a nation wide level…What do you think about that? And where do you see your self in a few years?
A: I love Bash for that!! Yo I hope he right. In a few years I see myself owning Pittsburg & changing the city`s name to Pie-Rx!
J: Aight Wax…Thanks a lot for takin the time to answer my questions….you wanna give any shout outs?
