Being that the original Night of the Living Dead is a public domain film, it basically means it's up for grabs for anyone who's willing to take it and mold it into whatever they want. Thus, we have yet another remake in development, this time planned to be a 3D CGI animated feature. Described as an "American-style anime," the film would offer an updated storyline and deliver more backstory on the lead characters.

Simon West Productions will produce Night of the Living Dead: Origins, which will be directed by newcomer Zebediah de Soto, who also wrote the script with David R. Schwartz. The duo apparently started a digital effects company, which will develop new cutting edge hardware/software. For Night they plan to use a new real-time effects system called "The Beast," which is said to allow the filmmakers to direct CG performances the same way as real live actors.

Yeah, they got fucked.

Night of the Living Dead lapsed into the public domain because the original theatrical distributor, the Walter Reade Organization, neglected to place a copyright indication on the prints. In 1968, United States copyright law required a proper notice for a work to maintain a copyright. Image Ten displayed such a notice on the title frames of the film beneath the original title, Night of the Flesh Eaters. The distributor removed the statement when it changed the title. According to George Romero, Walter Reade "ripped us off".

Because of the public domain status, the film is sold on home video by several distributors. As of 2006, the Internet Movie Database lists 23 copies of Night of the Living Dead retailing on DVD and nineteen on VHS. The original film is available to view or download free on Internet sites such as Google Video, Internet Archive and YouTube. As of October 2, 2008, it was the Internet Archive's second most downloaded film, with 515,561 downloads.

Several notable DVD releases have been issued by The Weinstein Company/Genius Products, 20th Century Fox/Legend Films (a new colorized version), and Anchor Bay Entertainment.

sucks for george romero that anyone and everyone can "remake" his movie. the 90's remake was dope tho. the last one they did in 3d should have never been made.

i wouldnt mind a remake that went in depth into what happened before the whole cemetery scene with Barbra. like when ben saw the zombie being stuffed into the camper of the truck at the diner and got out. when and where dudes daughter got bit. how the zombies got into the house to kill the uncle. top 10 favorite movie for me.
