Nevada Named "Most Dangerous State"
(KVVU) -- For the third consecutive year, Nevada was named the nation's most dangerous state, according to the Crime State Rankings 2006 by Morgan Quitno Press.
The state ranking shows crime in Nevada has risen 18 percent during the past five years, even though crime nationwide is down.
The 13th annual Most Dangerous and Safest State designations are based on six basic crime factors reported in Morgan Quitno's reference book, including: rates per 100,000 population for murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft. States are a ranked based on how they compare to the national average for each crime category.
According to the report, Nevada ranks fifth in murder, 11th in rape, second in robbery, 11th in aggravated assault and first in motor vehicle theft.
Police say the ranking is skewed because of our high ranking for stolen cars.
Joining Nevada at the top of the rankings list (in descending order) were Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona, and Maryland.
On the safer end of the rankings scale immediately preceding North Dakota were Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Wyoming.
