My brother has a laptop and it had some viruses on it from limewire, etc. so i installed a antivirus program ran that and ran ad-aware. most of the files were deleted but the windows update thing would never turn on and everytime i tried to turn it on some pop ups and shit would open up so i knew his computer wasnt free from infected files. so basically we get to the point where we try to do a system recovery from this 18 cds the computer makes us burn. they all load cool until disk 17 then it gets a error saying its missing a file. now his computer doesnt start up and it keeps sayin missing NTLDR file and it wont boot shit off a cd or floppy drive (laptop doesnt have floppy). ive tried doing some quick research online and couldnt find and real good sites that know how to fix it etc. so does anyone know how to fix this problem or know of a cheap route in fixing it like geek squad or some shit?

thanks

Reformat the HD and start fresh. If it says you are mnissing the NTLDR, youre fucked. That is a critical file located in the boot sector and without it, your windows will not boot, period.
yeah, i cant reformat it cus it wont even load up. we tried to do the HP recovery system program that came with the pc and it fucked it up instead of fixing it.

Did you make the first bootable drive the CD/DVD-ROM? If not, then it is trying to boot off the HD, and thats where the problem is coming in. Double check in BIOS to make sure you have the boot devices in the right order.

find the file and reburn that disc.

geek squad will charge you and arm and leg, they charged someone i know 70 bucks to install a power supply ontop of the cost of the power supply.. so like 165

when u first start up the computer you will see a prompt tellin you to press F2 to go to the bios (could be a different key), then from there make sure you have cd rom as first option so it tries to load from the cd first, then hd or floppy, save settings by hitting what it says to hit in order to save settings (probably F9)

but, if you dont got the 17th cd then you pretty much need a windows xp CD or if you want to download one, make sure its corporate edition and that it is a CD image or an ISO, burn it as a cd image in order for it to have the capability to run on startup since thats the only way you can run it.
burn it as a cd image using an ISO burner, normally i use MagicISO since its small and easy to crack

You should just reformat it really shouldn't be a problem. Put a windows disk in then when the computer starts too boot you should have the option to go into the setup by pressing F3 or ESC or something like that. After that go into the menu that has boot devices or drives and make sure that the cd drive is #1 on the list. When the computer boots it should boot from the cd and from there you can reformat the drive and put a clean install of windows on.

heres what to do....just dl a iso of windows xp and burn it to disc....make sure its a corporate edition of windows xp...corporate editions dont require tha activation bullshit...reformat the laptop like dude said earlier and do a fresh install...i think F2 is what u press when the laptop boots to get into bios....then go from there....doin a fresh install from a xp iso is far easier then 18 cds of recovery disks

Before doing anything, try booting to an XP disc. Once you get into the recovery console, run the command "fixmbr" and if there's no luck: "fixboot". Just for shits and giggles, if that doesnt work run the "chkdsk" command to see if the hard drive is still good, because that NTLDR (new technology loader) error sometimes means you have a dead hard drive.
