If you can, get it in a shop to give you a no charge estimate. (Sometimes shops will do this, sometimes there is a diagnostic fee)

Running an engine without oil is about the quickest surefire way to ruin an engine

You need to figure out why you lost around 4 quarts of oil asap before you blow your motor. Refilling it is a temporary solution. If you over fill it you can cause engine damage as well. I'd rather be a quart low than a quart over, if the oil starts hitting the crank you're fucked. But your biggest problem is finding out where the oil is going. It's either leaking, or it's burning. A leak is something that can usually be fixed relatively easy, if your burning all that oil your engine is on it's last legs.

You need to find out where it's leaking from. You're going to mess around and cause more damage than what you have. Do you have white smoke coming from the car? Check if the filter is on tight! check the hoses. If all else fails, get a bus pass!

Obviously you don't know how to keep up on the maintenance of your car. Have you ever even had the oil changed in that thing? If I were you, I'd just drive that bitch until its dead. I wouldn't throw any money into it... its old, the motor is obviously shot, and you don't know what you're doing anyway... Time for a new ride yo...

dawgg, if you put too much oil in it you can blow your seals & gaskets.

if you had white smoke, it could be at the least blown gasket or the worst, a crack in the engine block. I've had both happen. I got em from the auction though so they were shit to begin with.

If it was white smoke and your coolant was leaking, then the smoke was from your coolant. If your leaking oil slow enought to burn off and not leave stains or a trail then its probably coming from a gasket somewhere, if you engine is dirty (im sure it is) look around everywhere metal meets, if the is a clean spot that looks like its coming from somewhere thats gasketed, then thats most likeley where the oil is coming from because motor oil contains detergents, same would go if you tranny was leaking, just look for a clean spot. If you find somewhere like that, or you otherwise discover the leak, just replace the gasket. How does you car start in the morning and after you drove it for a while? If it starts cool in the morning or first time you drive it, but struggles or doesnt start at all when the engines warm then you may have a blown head gasket, which is replaceable but a pain in the ass most of the time. If it starts cool all the time, and doesnt knock or lose compression then you just got a leak somewhere, find it, fix it, have a good day. lol.
