So, who's in your top 3?

#21?
I wouldn't put Nnamdi in the top just yet.. But his 8 INTs and TD did help him out.. If he can continue playing good ball and keep it up he will def. be a top CB soon.. still dirty how the NFL hit him up last min about going to the probowl...

as for top 3 lets see.. No matter how much i dont like Bailey since hes a bronco you'd still have to put him up there..

I'd prob have Hall up there as well..

I'm not hatin saying Clements isnt good.. dudes got talent.. but you know as well as I know he aint the top defensive player

Fatal did admit that he didn't think Clements was worth that much. It's being reported that Clements is the highest paid defensive player in NFL HISTORY. Got Damn..... He's getting paid like a muthafucka. He better be able to shut muthafuckaz like Chad Johnson, Steve Smith... those type of receivers down. We'll see how it works out because the 9ers must have liked something about his play. I haven't seen him play so it's hard for me to judge.

There's no way Asante Samuels is overrated. You seen how quick New England franchised him.

As for the top corners I've seen play I'd go with
Chris McAllister
Champ Bailey
Asante Samuel
De Angelo Hall

I'd say Clements is arguably top 5, but not top 3. He is a shut-down corner though, and that's what the Niners needed..

The only clear-cut two are Champ Bailey at #1 and Asante Samuel at #2, after that there is room for debate.

49ers Come Out Swinging

http://49ersnews.wordpress.com/

For what seems the first time in a long time, the 49ers came out swinging on the first day of free agency. I guess $30+ million will do that to you. On a day when all thoughts were that the 49ers would sign Adalius Thomas, the 49ers went a different way. Instead of showing Thomas the money, they made cornerback Nate Clements the highest paid defensive back in the league, they awarded Clements an eight year, $80 million deal with $22 million of it guaranteed.

They didn’t stop there however, they proceeded to strengthen their secondary by acquiring former Eagles safety Michael Lewis. The deal reportedly is a six year deal, with at least $10 million in guarantees. After those two signings you figured they were done for the day, right? Wrong. The latest reports are the 49ers and Ravens defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin have agreed to a 3-year, $6 million contract that includes a $3 million signing bonus.

Three player visits, three signings. So far the 49ers are batting 1.000 and the latest reports to end the day are that the 49ers are interested in Dolphins linebacker Donnie Spragan, and all signs are pointing to them landing him as well.

IMO...there is no such thing as a shut down corner.

Corners get beat all the time...and alot of times they look good if the front 7 puts alot of pressure on the QB. No doubt he is a good corner...but he doesn't deserve to be the highest paid D player ever.

I think the Niners really had to do this though. They are trying to get back on top...and a signing like this shows that they are serious about doing so.

Just sucks that you have fork over so much money on one guy like that.

I agree that all corners do get beat.. I played CB in high school as well as RB, and it's much harder to defend (obviously) because you don't know where the guy is gonna go. Every CB gets caught off guard now and then, but Clements is a ball hawk and doesn't give up many big plays. The Niners gave up huge plays thru the air last season and that needed to stop. I think part of the reason Nolan and the 49ers gave him so much money is because he hasn't been injured, so he's a durable and reliable player.. That's something that can't be said about any other CB on the Niners roster (except Walt Harris, but he's only been there one year).

I also agree they overpaid for him, but I'm almost positive it was for a reason. I'm thinking they used him as an example to future Free Agents.. Now these guys will have SF at the top of their lists when it comes time to explore a new team because they know the Niners are serious about winning and they're serious about acquiring talent and paying that talent good money. Take for example Adalius Thomas.. The first team he visited was NE and they made him an offer that he felt was good enough so he didn't bother exploring other teams.. I believe the Niners want these big name guys to choose SF as their first stop so they can lock them up before anybody else gets to make an offer.

I've been saying at least we are commiting to winning our d was fucking horrible last year sometimes you overpay to get guys to come over (All professional sports do the same especially in MLB just ask Zito) and if Nate dont work out we can cut his ass in a couple years but for now stop crying cuz the niners are making moves...

Man Please don't even put De Angelo Hall in the top 5, foo got burned too many times last season, he was one of the biggest reasons why the Falcons allowed the most points scored, and I believe was very close to being last in stopping the pass. Your list is nice, but remove De Angelo Hall, and give it to Clements or Rashawn Mathis please.

im a big falcons and dhall fan but i tend to somewhat agree with you. ever since his first probowl he got a big head and he's been going for the big play when he should just deflect a pass. roy williams, t.o., and one of the saints receivers (henderson maybe) scored on him like this. although he played in a bend dont break zone he ran his mouth and got schooled by just about every wr imaginable this year. to his credit he played a good part of the season with a nagging hamstring he still didnt learn to shut his mouth.. maybe this is the year. with saying that, he still has the ball skills to be THE #1 in the league. i believe it was champ bailey who gave him that compliment.

Yep they did overpay for a reason to set that standard of our willingness to want to win again and that we aint cheap and this will reel in top names for the coming seasons this shit is a good plan, also this will speak volumes for the future when it comes to getting a new deal done for a new stadium in SF.

I agree with Red sin (finally!). Hall had a shitty ass year. I'd put Charles Tillman from da bears, who has a much better season than Hall (more interceptions, more tackles and got burned less (no TD's during regular season)) a head of Hall, probably even Nathan Vasher from da bears too. There are a number of other guys that are better in the league than Hall too.

With that being said, ranking the CB position is tough to do because numbers don't always tell the fully story, plus some CB's do better with certain defensive schemes than others and also the defensive team as a whole is a huge factor (such as a very good pass rushing team will create more turnovers, less time to throw, etc., which makes the CB's jobs a lot easier).
