God damn, I was reading the post the other day about the Underground Summerjam, and I wasnt very surprised to see that the folks giving the most rave reviews were the artists that performed at the venue...In no way is this a personal shot at anyone but I gotta let it be known- Bay Area rap shows have great potential but almost always end up being shitty!

Need I site other examples? How bout that big concert on Mission St. last year near Christmas where the crowd waited for 3 hrs to hear Yukmouth, Quinn and numerous other acts until 12:30 at night when the club got shot down for people gettin rowdy? Or the Nickatina concert in Gilroy where the audience had to wait two hours and listen to a bunch of rappers no one knew of nor cared of nor were very good cause Cellski and Nickatina werent there? Or the show Mac Dre skipped out on that left everyone on the board pissed off until he made a videoclip "sincerely" apologizing to his fans?

Artists talk about how they need to push units and are on here promoting their albums all the time, fuck yall! Get off your fuckin computers and go to your local bar and talk to the manager about a show because you really need practice! This is to the amatures and more seasoned artists! Ive seen too many shows that have the potential to blow out a concert by a more popular artist at a larger venue go down the drain because the rappers dont know how to do a good fuckin show!

Ive seen a number of performances over the year from local and more mainstream artists, and even a few cats from out of town. I learned quite a few things. The first thing I learned is that a Nickatina concert is $30, and an Outkast concert is $30, and you get a lot more for your money at an Outkast concert. If you dont believe me, you should really check them out, especially when they bring rappers like Ludacris and Xzibit to back them up. But thats really not a diss to Nickatina at all. Nickatina is the best local performer out there, and half of the people who used to support him think hes washed up or something because his music doesnt sound like everyone elses...

Its really a sad thing. I dont really know what else to say. Obviously, this post isnt going to change a whole lot, but at least it puts it all out on the table. When you check a live show from our artists and you check a show from out of town artists or out of the bay somewhere, you'll really see how far ahead THEY are...or are we just behind?

NO LIP SINGING! NO HAVIN ALL THE HOMIES ON THE STAGE WHO ARENT RAPPIN AND ARENT MCS. NO FORGETTING LYRICS! CHECK YOUR EQUIPMENT BEFORE THE SHOW! GET YOUR SONGS IN ORDER! ARRIVE ON TIME! PUT ON A GOOD LENGTH SET! Please be professional when you do your thing!

Local acts I would see again: Quinn, Nickatina, NBD
Local acts I would like to see: Yukmouth, Bo, Lynch, Mac Mall

you have a good point but i'll point out the problems, why ther e is a differance in a outkast show and a nicky show...

outkast: are on a major label, they are most likely getting paid very well to do the show, not $500-1000, but prolly $15,000+ for each of them..... also they have managers, they have people behind them that there one job is to make sure they are on time, they have a guy who's 1 job is to make sure the show cd is done, and they also have thousands of dollars into promotion for the show, they also have a huge fan base prolly 100 times bigger then nickatina...

now nickatina: 1st off let me say the show is sac was a great show, i will say $35 is alot of money to get into any show, i honestly wouldnt pay that for anyone.... but nicky has a pretty big fan base in northern cali, if he can charge $35 at t he door and still pull in 400-800 people, can you blame him for chargin $35 a head??? no , cuz the people still come.... and his show was on point.... but nicky is also a pioneer in t he game, he ahead of alot of the younger cats out here, that i will say for th e most part are either late, or just unprepared for there performance.....

i definately feel your gripe, cuz i do shows, and because i run my shit as well as anyone, i still have artist fuck up my show with bullshit like being way too fuckin late, or no show, or just dont put on a good show, but i'll tell you this, if you aint paying the artist alot of money, they tend to not put on ther e best show, and that and the fact that most artist in northern cali dont have very good bussines practices.... alot of artist let some other dude handle all t here bullshit, and dont even know whats goin on.... or they handle all there own bussiness, but because they arent aware of how the game works, they just dont follow through....

but to your point you will always get a better show with well established cats thats on a major label, then you will goin to underground or indipendant events.... just like you get a better quality album from a major label then and idipendant.... but there are those few labels that do major shit on an idndi level....

i also think that rap cats these days just dont take live performances too seriously...... which is a major downfall of bay rap...... we dont get much support when we throw the events from the fans, but at the same time, the fans aint always gettin what they feel they paid for when they do attend these events.....

either way, bout 90% of the shows i have thrown have had good to very good turn outs, and majority of the expected artist do make the show, and i also never charge more then $10 at a show, so its almost impossible to not get your money's worth....

by the way the bart to the 91siccness record release party is this friday!!!!! at the gilroy gaslighter theatre, all ages, only $10!!!

come support!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i dig this post alot and as an artist I feel you completely homie. I did a show a while back and i must ay i need ed practice. The people said it was cool but I knew I could have rocked way harder. So now I'm back at the office getting my stage presense together and how i want to rep myself onn a stage. So your really right homie. I think artists need to step it up and give the crowd what they came to see.

Great post

I had a couple of incidents where artists faked/made excuses andhad to read them the riot act. We have 8 artists and the basic message was, If we can't count onyou to be there, prepared, and ready to go..... you're off the label. Haven't had any problems since.
Inf act, its the opposite, we've been on the docket for three shows and my boys are always early and ready, with stage tapes in hand... but the shows get cancelled at the last minute. We turn it into a promo opp, but its not the same as a show. THey have had a couple go forward and have been very good. The preparation comes in the show tape, they have to have that a weeek in advance (minimum) in order to prepare fr their show.
Now, they love it. But we had to get past that bullshit first and get them to understand that this isn't the streets.

If there are any promoters looking for acts. PaperTrail is ready, willing, and able to turn your shit out. Get at me, we will be ther, on time, prepared, and ready to turn shit out.

People are always quick to blame the soundman when there show sounds like shit. I've seen it a million times.

The reality is people don't do proper soundchecks before shows so their sets sound like shit.

Be on time and do a real soundcheck.

In my opinion bay area artists arent really serious about their shit. If I was a artist putting on a show Id do as many songs as I could in the time period I have. Showing up late is just telling yall what kind of person they really are. I mean you paid XX$ amount and they arent even there.

Whats with all the artist having like 20 people on stage. Is there any point to that? Most of the people are just dancing acting like fools. I've been to a outkast concert and pretty much the whole time it was big boi and andre3000 on stage with the DJ. The dj being in the back. Their stuff is setup professional.

If bay area artist are going to try and get by with half ass performances and think we wont notice...Try again

yeah i think bay artists dont put in as much effort on stage shows. I mean with the exception of like hieroglyphics, mystic journeymen, and other more abtract shit. I didnt pay to see your boys on stage dancin. Maybe if the stage shows are better, there would me more chance of wide spread coverage. I want the bay to shine, but its like the bay dont really wanna shine. The stage show is what makes a good rapper, a good entertainer. No one takes the live show seriously anymore, this is the type of shit that made KRS- one, Kane, shit all the ol school greats the legends they are today. These bay artists should look at it as an art form. A craft that u have to master, not jus easy money. imo

I totally agree with everything you said! Noone wants to come see a show where everybody else is on stage and you can barely see the person you came to see! My artist and nieghborhood is very guilty of that! This I promise if you are old enough to get in this show on the 12th in San Jose Come out you will witness the best San Quinn performane in a long time! trust that! They are practicing right now! It will only be 5 people on stage and its gunna be a Dope show As far as the words some of Quinn old songs he has to go over the cd with the words because technology aint the same as when some of those songs were made we cant get the instrumentals, but the other ones he will go he is gunna do some surprise songs with features its gunna crack! But i agree and after jumping off tour with 40/Nelly I learned alot that im bringing to my camp we are getting ready for this tour where alot of people have never heard of us & we are trying to make news fans and there is no way better to do it!

Ya rap over insturmentals. Nickys shows are always unprepared. Hes always like "alright go to the next song. no the next one ok 3 back. alright. no we did this..."

I wish cellski would be at more concerts. W/o nicky so he can headline and do whatever songs he wants...

Krushadelic is coo but his performance is ruined by the fucking background dancers. This aint no fuckin mc hammer concert get the hell off the stage.

San quinn and Equipto are the best two performers right now. The need to collaberate.

lol hell yeah this aint 1988! I wanna see that quinn show tho. Damn dude should be on mtv or bet or something, never seen him live, so that would be dope. I love hip hop concerts, and seeing a dope one is better then getting drunk at a wack one.
i jus want the bay to blow up man its been way too long!!
