Oakland police say night of "sideshow" violence one of worst in
city
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Oakland police say a night of violence
over the weekend was one of the worst nights the city has ever seen
from so-called "sideshow" driving.
Two men were shot to death, and three police officers were
injured as hundreds of spectators gathered to watch cars race
Friday night and early Saturday morning.
An estimated 200 cars racing through the streets of East Oakland
kept officers busy until about 6:00 Saturday morning.
One officer was hurt when someone put a brick on a car's
accelerator, tied off the steering wheel and sent the vehicle down
toward several officers at high speed.
The car struck a marked patrol car, injuring the officer inside.
One veteran Oakland police commander says he can't remember the
last time three officers were injured in a single shift.
The most violent incident of the night took place when two men
were shot to death while they watched the racing.
