I've had MONO before. Kissing someone who has it is not the only way to contact it. Sharing a drink, meal, or simply touching something infected then touching your mouth/lips afterwards, are all possible ways to catch it. For example if someone who has mono was biting their nails and holding to a handle on a bus, then you hold on to that same handle which still has their saliva on it. Basically, you can catch it if you come in contact with infected saliva, but it does not have to be through kissing.
As far as treatment, its a virus, so antibiotics don't work. I was only prescribed Vicodin to help with the pain. I was in a lot of pain. My neck was extremely sore and swollen. It hurt really bad just to swallow food or drink anything. I lost a bunch of weight because I couldn't eat due to the pain. I basically took the recommended dose of vicodin and tried to sleep as much as possible. After about 2 weeks, the pain subsided and I got better.
You'll have to rough it out for a week or two, then it gets better. Don't worry. Though I do recommend you see a doctor if it doesn't get better after a few weeks, in case its not mono. In case you have step throat, its not even as bad as mono, though the symptoms are very similar.
