MAYHEM & TRIGG ANNOUNCED FOR HDNET FIGHTS

Mark Cuban’s HDNet Fights on Friday officially announced its Dec. 15 event at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

The co-main events feature four Ultimate Fighting Championship veterans. Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Sean Salmon will square off, sharing top billing with Frank Trigg and his opponent, Edwin Dewees.

Also announced for the event, entitled “Reckless Abandon,” are fights between Yves Edwards and Alonzo Martinez, Pete Spratt and Tristan Yunker, Chris Bowles and Cory Mahon, Patrick Castillo and Jay White, and Freddie Espiricueta and C.B. Dollaway.

"With Frank (Trigg) and Jason (Miller), you know there's going to be a ton of action and lots of bizarre things can happen in the cage," said Guy Mezger, HDNet Fights’ matchmaker.

"Frank is called ‘Twinkle Toes’ because he's known for painting his toe nails, but it certainly doesn't represent his vicious fighting style.

"On the other hand, Jason has certainly earned his ‘Mayhem’ nickname. With him, you never know what you will see, but you know it will be something crazy."

"We're thrilled to have these talented and entertaining fighters on board with HDNet Fights," said Cuban. "Our goal is to present the best fighters in the best fights we can make. These are two of the top middleweights in the world and we are fortunate enough to have them both fighting on the same card.

The remainder of the fight card has yet to be announced.

Sherk Camp Not Happy With New CSAC Appeal Hearing Date
The following is an excerpt from an article on TheFightNetwork.com:

Howard Jacobs, the attorney representing UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk in his appeal of a California State Athletic Commission suspension for suspected steroid use, has formally protested the latest scheduled hearing date of Tuesday, Dec. 4 in Los Angeles. Sherk’s case has already been postponed twice.

Jacobs said all parties involved, including commissioners and the state’s legal counsel " Deputy Attorney General Karen Chappelle " had agreed to reconvene for a Nov. 13 hearing, provided they could secure a room in which to conduct it.

“I seemingly can’t force them to give me an explanation as to why the deputy attorney general suddenly became unavailable [for Nov. 13] when she said she was available,” Jacobs said. “I can’t get them to explain to me why there’s no one in the entire State Attorney General’s office who can handle the case or why " if there was another matter that came up for Karen Chappelle " she can’t postpone that matter, because she already agreed to this one. I’ve asked for answers to all those questions, and I haven’t been told anything.”

Luke Cummo Discusses UFC Fighter Meeting, Next Fight

The following is a blog entry from Ultimate Fighter star and UFC veteran Luke Cummo's MySpace page:

November ’07 Update }:)

My son is 4 weeks old already. Its amazing watching him grow so fast! I am looking forward to when my wife goes back to work in January and I will be Mr. Mom.

I went to Las Vegas yesterday only for the day because there was a mandatory UFC meeting for all fighters. Basically they had different aspects of the corporation represented, including the Nevada State Athletic Comission, doctors, lawyers, production and public relations, etc.

Anyway I emailed the matchmaker to see if I could get on the Dec. 29th card when Matt Serra defends his belt. Unfortunately they have filled all the matches up so I'm on the waiting list in case someone gets injured. I'll be taking over for Ray Longo a little while he's out in Vegas with Matt. Then once my schedule changes I'll start fight training and look to book something for early-ish 2008.

Thanks everyone for your positive emails. Check out my website if I take too long to respond. I'm on and off the forums throughout the day and answer as many questions as I can. I'm also taking applications for people who want to stay in my apartment building for 5-14 days to do personal training and Lifefood Nutritional Fasting.

Betting lines out for EliteXC: Renegade

The well-respected Oddessa Line, which is carried worldwide by most Offshore, European, and Las Vegas Sportsbooks and Casinos, has posted odds on Saturday's EliteXC excellent cage fight card at the American Bank Center Arena at Corpus Christi, Tex., on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT/delayed on the west coast).

In the main event for the EliteXC world lightweight championship, Nick Diaz is a minus 440 favorite to defeat KJ Noons (plus 400). If you like Diaz to win, you wager 440 to win 100; if you think Noons will win, you bet 100 to win 400.

In other televised fights, Kimbo is -400 over Bo Cantrell (+360), Jake Shields is -355 over Mike Pyle (+305), Antonio Silva is -345 over Jonathan Wiezorek (+315) and Kyle Noke is -130 over Seth Kleinbeck (+120).

''The EliteXC Card is getting steady two way-action,'' Joey Oddessa said. "Despite being put in with a much more experienced mixed martial arts fighter in Cantrell, there has been a significant amount of money wagered on Kimbo. Judging by the volume, it appears that even the casual MMA fan recognizes Slice. The line has moved from its opening number( -300) clear up to -400 overnight. Laying a steep price is a risky proposition considering this is Kimbo's MMA debut, but players aren't holding back.

''Quite the opposite is taking place in the Diaz-Noons bout. Bettors are banking Diaz's experience will lead him to victory. That line moved from the opener of -400 to -440 within a couple hours. One surprise is the heavy volume on the Noke-Kleinbeck fight. It appears there is strong support for the Australian Noke.

''If the wagering action on the EliteXC card is any indication of the success of the card, then Showtime and EliteXC should expect a great show with solid ratings. The steady volume on competitive match-ups ensure that fans will be tuning in with high expectations.''

Fedor Defends Combat Sambo World Championship
Fedor Emelianenko (Pictures) won the open-weight division of the 31st Combat Sambo World Championship on Nov. 10 in Prague. With the win, the 31-year-old Russian, widely regarded as the No. 1 heavyweight fighter in the world, defended the title he won two years ago in the Czech Republic capital.

To do so, he had to step on the mats only once. The 220-plus-pound representative from Uzbekistan did not show in Prague, thus giving Fedor a bye to the semifinals. There he quickly took out a Bulgarian fighter via choke to set up a meeting with a Ukrainian competitor in the finals.

Much to Fedor's chagrin, the Ukrainian fighter, who had defeated UFC veteran Kristof Midoux (Pictures) in the other semifinal, did not turn up either, handing Fedor the victory.

The win gives the member of Red Devil Sport Club his fourth world championship medal in combat sambo, a sport not unlike mixed martial arts. Victory can be achieved by submission and by points scored for throws and activity. With a total of 10 championship medals in Russian, European and world competition, Fedor has become one of the most successful fighters ever in the sport.

His participation in the competition, which with 780 representatives from 45 countries was by far the biggest of its kind, had been one of the sticking points on why the undefeated PRIDE heavyweight champion turned down a very lucrative offer to fight in the UFC. Instead he opted for a contract with newly established promotion M-1 Global, which allowed him to compete on Saturday.

THIAGO SILVA UNPHASED BY ALEXANDER'S FAST KO'S

Currently sporting an undefeated professional record, which includes being 2-0 inside the Octagon, Thiago Silva looks to keep his winning streak intact when he faces upstart light heavyweight Houston Alexander at Ultimate Fighting Championship 78 on Saturday in Newark, N.J.

When in Brazil, Silva trains at the famed Chute Boxe academy. He has also recently started working with Marco Alvan and Team Link in the United States, but Silva is quick to point out that he works with both teams and never broke away from Chute Boxe.

“I want to make sure people understand that I never left Chute Boxe and never left Macaco,” said Silva in an interview with MMAWeekly. “I am part of Team Link because it is the union of the schools. Macaco and Marco are great friends and work together to build new champions with the union of Team Link.”

While in the United States, he feels it is the best place to prepare him for what his upcoming fight will offer working closely with Alvan and other UFC fighters such as Gabriel Gonzaga.

“My coach, Jorge Patino; my manager, Marco Alvan; and Gabriel Gonzaga are all Team Link,” stated Silva. “We worked together since the first fight of Napao (Gonzaga) in the UFC. I am feeling really good to be part of Team Link as well as Macaco and Chute Boxe.”

In Alexander’s previous fights in the UFC (wins over Keith Jardine and Alessio Sakara), the Nebraska native has racked up less than two minutes of total time while scoring two devastating knockouts. Silva agrees that he hasn’t seen enough of him to truly see all that he could bring to the fight, but is confident in his game plan.

“The fights were very fast, but we could have an idea how is going to be (to help) my strategy going to this fight,” he said. “I watched his videos and I thought the fights were too fast. I need to worry what will (happen) in my fight with him, not to worry with what happened in his last fights.”

In this bout, Silva has the chance to automatically boost himself to top contender status given Alexander’s impressive wins so far, but the Brazilian only concerns himself with a win.

“I don’t think about this,” he said about the magnitude of the fight. “I am just focused on my training and when I step in the Octagon everything will happen naturally.”

Also on the line, as it is in every fight, is his unblemished record, but again he stays focused and looks only at the task at hand.

“I feel really good and I want to keep my clean record,” said a confident Silva.

And while the attention may be on Alexander before the fight, Silva is ready for what could be the most exciting bout on the entire UFC 78 fight card.

“It is going to be a great fight with two strong fighters that like to hit hard. The UFC fans are going to love this fight!”

“Countdown to UFC 78″ Debuts Tomorrow on Spike TV

“Countdown to UFC 78,” the official preview show for the UFC’s upcoming pay-per-view event, debuts tomorrow (Monday) at midnight ET/PT on Spike TV.

Replays of the one-hour special air Thursday, Nov. 15 at 11 p.m. ET/PT and Saturday, Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. ET/PT.

“UFC 78: Validation” takes place Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. For the first time ever, two winners from the UFC’s reality series will battle when “The Ultimate Fighter 2” winner Rashad Evans and “The Ultimate Fighter 3” winner Michael Bisping meet in the night’s main event.

UFC President Dana White has hinted that the fight has title implications, which adds some clout to a fight that ended up being a Plan C for UFC 78.

UFC 78 was originally slated to to feature a main event between UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk and B.J. Penn, but Sherk’s failed UFC 73 drug test and subsequent appeal have put the division on hold. The top spot was then given to Evans and Tito Ortiz, but a new deal couldn’t be reached with Ortiz, and he took off to appear on a celebrity edition of “The Apprentice.“

Also appearing on the televised UFC 78 main card are Houston Alexander vs. Thiago Silva, Ed Herman vs. Joe Doerksen, Ryo Chonan vs. Karo Parisyan, and Frankie Edgar vs. Spencer Fisher.

UFC 78 will be the first UFC show to take place in New Jersey since UFC 53 in June 2005.

UFC 81: Tito Ortiz wants to fight the Rashad Evans-Michael Bisping winner in February

“When I lost to Chuck Liddell I took a step down. When I fought Rashad (Evans) I thought I won the fight. It was supposed to happen again, but it ain’t happening. I looked at a thing on UFC.tv and it said the lightheavyweights are Rashad vs (Michael) Bisbing and there were others that were contenders, but my picture wasn’t on it. They are just trying to hold on and make sure the fighters don’t get more powerful. I am going to work to get the right fights and that belt will be around my waist.”

While in Edmonton, Canada, former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz discusses his intentions for the future. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” was supposed to headline the the upcoming UFC 78: “Validation” card on November 17; however, talks broke down and Michael Bisping filled his spot against “Sugar.” Ortiz has one fight remaining on his current UFC contract.
