Royals have decent pitching: Lima, Greinke, Runelvys, Affeldt. Look for a sweeney comeback year, not to mention Ken Harvey (All Star) Berroa (Rookie of the year) DeJesus is gonna break out in center, and Buck behind the plate. Oh, it will happen. It Will.
OH BOY.....here we go......
If you're pinning your hopes on Lima (time), Runelvys Hernandez and Jeremy Affeldt to carry the pitching staff then you're in some deep shit. Zach Greinke is the real deal.....i will not dispute that....but lets start with Lima TIME!
Did he not prove to the Royals that his last stint with them was a fluke? Take a closer look at his stats....sure he had a 4.07 ERA last year.......BUT HE PITCHED IN DODGER STADIUM....one of the best pitchers parks in baseball. 9-1 w/3.08 era at Chavez Ravine.....4-4 5.56 era on the road. Still don't believe me? Remember 2 years ago when he came out of nowhere....well the independent league actually....to pitch for the Royals around mid-season? He had a couple of good games against the Indians and Seattle.....and I think he even beat the Cardinals (sorry shep)....but the guy pitched like dog shit against all other opponents that season. 12.60 and 9.22 era in aug and sept......when it matters most. Lima's TIME has definately passed him.
Hernandez is coming off reconstructive elbow surgery.......nuff said....if he does well.....great.....if not.....you shouldn't be upset.
Affeldt....I really like this guy. I thought he was going to be in the royals rotation for years to come. He has nasty stuff. But then someone thought it would be a great idea to make him their closer. Yeah, that worked out well.......13/17 in save oppertunities.....thats 4 blown saves for those who cannot subtract. Thats about a 75% save percentage......a good closer should pin down a lead at least 85% of a time. If he had around 50 save opps last year like most closers get each year, he would have paced out to about 12 blown saves last year. Estiban Yan lead the league with 10 last year. Affeldt=not a good closer.
They may have a couple of bats in the lineup....but the white sox last year proved that you can score all the runs in the world, but if your pitching sucks ass you lose games.
Lesson for the day....don't depend on mediocre pitching.
