i dont think because I mix on the radio that makes me garbage. After DJin in the bay for 16 years, i dont think anyone need question my DJ skills.\

and by the way..I did my first Mix CD in 1997.... and had many mixtapes (cassette) before that, that we sold at the record store I worked at. Also DJ Ajaxxx, Shortkut, Relm, ISP, Apollo, etc.... the mixtape scene in the bay is way older than 3 years...but I understand the point you are making.

i dont see what the difference in cats puttin songs from other cats on mixtapes compared to cats jackin mainstream beats from their mixtapes, its still takin somebodys work for profit.just like cats sampling beats for songs,no one gives credit.the only underground cat i seen who sampled beats and gave credit for'em was Gangsta Dre's old shit.he put "played by Gap Band & Zapp, atleast he gave credit.........its all wrong but you gotta get mad at bothsides if your gona trip off one.........

now,not to knock anyones hustle...but I got a "mixtape" from this on girl DJ Smocha... It was an all-Jay-Z mixtape, all his songs, all previously released.

here is my beef with this type of "mixtape":

a) Its Jay-Z. I dont think he needs the promotion.

b) if i just took all my favorite Jigga songs, put an echo at the end of each song, then how is that a Mixtape as opposed to a compilation?

now ur probably thinking, who cares? Its Jay-Z, he's got more money than god... and you are right. Im sure this wont put any dent in Jigga's wallet

BUT

what if she had taken 20 San Quinn or Mac Dre songs? How would you feel then? If i could buy a Mac dre mixtape for 10 bucks, with all the songs, why am I going to spend 19.99 for each Best of Mac Dre compilation, or even 12.99 for each album? by purchasing that mixtape as opposed to those albums, i have just taken money away from an independant struggling artist. One copy may not mean much, but 100, or 1000 copies, at $5-6 bucks per? Thats some decent money. The Bay area already has a problem supporting local artists with sales. I see the Jacka comes with a great album, and sells 1200 or so first week, and I think.."thats good for him", but I see bullshit MTV artists sell 20-30,000 first week in the bay alone. I understand why, but as vocal as everyone seems to be about supporting Bay artists on radio, noone seems to be as vocal when it comes to actually opening their wallets.

my point is this...at what point does her mixtape cross the line? or any mixtape? Taking from a major-label artist, with a major-label budget, doesnt seem as bad..but takin from independant artists, some of whom are my personal friends..I cant condone it.

we need to get on board WITH the artists. Rah 2k is doin it, the Demoltion men too, Mark 7 etc... I wont take money out of a local artists pocket, and i would hope no DJ in the bay would either.

just my humble fucking opinion as I see ads for bay area mixtapes on this board.

All I have to say about this matter is if any DJ's plan on using any Jacka's music, or any of the Mob Figaz music needs to holla at PK or myself about it. I feel that is just on general principle. You do not just take a song and put it on your mixtape and start selling it without hollering at someone about it first. That is classless as far as m concerned. And im the nice guy, just think about what our artists think about it and how they would deal with it. Just some food for thought.
