It was my understanding that a mix tape usually had other artists beats with a dj mixing the songs. And that a comp had a collection of artists on one album.
I ask this cause I see "mix tapes" out there that are basically compilations with no mixing or a dj hosting the tape.

If this has already been discussed then dirsegard and I will ride the fail train home.

well another thing with mixtapes is you can do whatever the fuck you want. Like you could sample Michael Jackson but use the sample to make an original beat. You wouldn't want to do that on a comp because you could potentially get sued for copyright infringement. But mixtape is like no rules there's so many ways to flip it.

Yeah I think compilation is a collection of artists or songs. A mixtape should be mixed together. Either vocals mixed onto others beats or the songs mixed together so they blend.

yup. think about it. you can rap on a jayz beat on a mixtape and not get sued if it doesn't have a bar code. rap on a jayz beat on a comp and if you sell enough in stores you gonna get sued.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Either way I think artists are miss using the word mix tape when it's really a compilation. I think this is because it's trendy to have a mix tape and not a compilation.

lookup all that dj drama shit he got in trouble for using beats and it was a big debate about what is a "mixtape". I think mixtapes should be mixed by a dj and comps are a collection of songs by different artists.

A compilation should be original beats, and full songs. It can be presented a by an artist (or 2) but i always thought of a compilation being put out by a label. It should be "official", unlike a mixtape, which is a mix/unofficial blend of songs. Also, the artist that presents it doesnt have to be on all the songs.

I was into mixtapes for a minute.... but right now I am ready to bust a turntable or laptop over some of these dj's heads...... the names drops/dj drops, etc...are getting excessive and sound like shit...

I was listening to Twista Calm Before the Storm and what do I hear.... Get In Tune... Get In Tune.... over ever track.. shit gets old. Even DJ Quick and AMG have "It Slappeth Ohhhh... on just about ever track..

I liked the way Mixtapes used to be.. more music less talk. a few interlude, skits and keep it moving... drop the dj drops.
