REDWOOD CITY -- San Franciscans Tito Sedeno and John Navarro walked into the courtroom with smiles on their faces and hope of a mistrial. They walked out with bewildered expressions and life-long prison sentences.
Nearly three years after Pacifica resident Raymond Gardner's death, his killers were sentenced on Friday for his murder.
Gardner, 22, was passenger in a friend's car in the early- morning hours of Jan. 12, 2003, when the driver honked his horn at an SUV that was recklessly weaving in and out of lanes on state Highway 380.
Sedeno and Navarro, both 23, were in the SUV and responded to the honk by opening fire on the other vehicle. Gardner was asleep when a bullet struck him in the head and he died before ever waking up.
The first murder trial ended with a hung jury in April. At the second trial in September, a jury returned guilty verdicts for first- degree murder and attempted murder for the gunshots that missed Gardner's friends.
