Hip Hop Congress and Phillup Drummond Announce Mindgames:
A 32-Man/16-Team Emcee Battle for $2000/$1000
at 2232 MLK in Oakland on June 2nd and 3rd
Fundraiser for Hip Hop Congress National Conference

California has a tradition of fine Hip Hop events. Throughout the state, events like Street Rock, the B-Boy Summit and a host of others represent the finest in element expression and competition. In that tradition, Hip Hop Congress and Phillup Drummond in association with 2232 MLK present Mindgames II: An Emcee Battle. This battle will host some of the finest talent in the country in a 32-man and 16-team competition on June 2nd and 3rd in Oakland at 2232 MLK. This event is a fundraiser for the Hip Hop Congress National Conference set for June 22nd-25thrd in Boulder, Colorado.

Mindgames I, which was held in Menlo Park in 2005, was one of the finest displays of emcee battling on the West Coast. Some of the attendees included Franco (Dirty Rat/Last Years Champion) Thesaurus (Scribble Jam Finalist), Illmaculate (Scribble Jam Winner) Presence and Ill Spoken (Winners of the 2 on 2), Otherwize (Project Blowed) and Oakland’s own F.L.O., Passwerdz and Oroku Saki. This year’s contest will have a $2000 prize for the 32-man one-on-one and a $1000 for the 16-team 2-on-2.

Hip Hop Congress is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and international grassroots network that educates, unites and empowers individuals. We utilize Hip Hop to inspire civil action and cultural creativity within the community. Hip Hop Congress has about 30 chapters throughout the country and works with artists, organizers, promoters and a host of other institutions and organizations. Hip Hop Congress is involved in education, culture, politics, social justice and industry. This year’s national conference, which is being hosted by the University of Colorado at Boulder Chapter, will develop a national service infrastructure for HHC with a variety of different student groups, artists and partners. This means working with more students, more artists and more communities.

Shamako Noble, president of Hip Hop Congress and one the lead organizers, had this to say about the event, “Mindgames is rapidly becoming a cultural cornerstone of the California Hip Hop community. The competition is fierce and the move to Oakland is going to give us just the kind of vibe we want. Hip Hop Congress is honored to be a part of this.” Phillup Drummond, a notable networker in the national battle scene, noted, “Nothing of this magnitude is being done in California. At Mindgames, we’re sure to bring out all the best talent in a contest the likes of which hasn’t occurred in the Bay Area.”

Preliminaries will be held on June 2nd with performances by judges like East Oakland’s Greatest Dlabrie, and Grunge of the South Bay Supergroup Thunderhut. The price at the door is $10. Advance tickets can be purchased online at http://www.2232mlk.com/tickets.html. Tickets for both days are $15 and can only be purchased in advance. There are also a variety of sponsorship and booth opportunities available. Community-based organization are encouraged to inquire.
