Hey man,

On one level, I actually can see people being mad about this, because the worthy local stuff just doesn't get any national play and that can be infuriating, but it's never had any play. I mean just going back a coupla years, I wish Straight Outta Hunters Point would have received some sort of national recognition, if only to show someone out there what's going on where life is hard and to remind those of us who post on this forum and are members of this community what this art form is supposed to ultimately be about.

But it's always been hard for local shit to break through. I think the last time any bay artists got anything in the way of national recognition was when the female MC Mystic had that song "W" with Planet Asia. That shit was nominated for a grammy in 2001. It took a very special performance by Mystic to break that barrier and it doesn't happen all the time.

But hey, at least Ressurection was nominated, and even though it didn't win, it lost to a film about children on the streets of Calcutta who were born to prostitute mothers. Since the film is dedicated to helping poor children who live on the streets, and since an important part of hip hop is also about helping people understand what goes on in poor urban areas, their goals are really compatible with ours and I'm not gonna take it too hard that the 'Pac documentary didn't win.

As for Mac Dre, he lived his life in obscurity (at least outside of the bay) and we shouldn't be surprised that his death didn't change that.
