do you guys have any suggestions on how to make your computer as quiet as possible to insure your sound isn't compromised?

9 times out of 10 for most users a quieter fan is what's needed. My fan's hella loud now...lol and I don't notice it in the recordings at all. I had a slight noise problem before, all I did was get rid of that sorry ass berhinger(sp?) mixer I had and I was good to go. It's more of an annoyance than anything though. The fan noise that is. Especially when monitoring.

you cant treat this several ways but what exactly is your problem? Are you picking up the noise in your recordings (as room noise) or is the noise actually being transferred FROM the computer to the actual files (kinda like a 60 ycle hum but different.)

Hit the link DB posted and this can also be found on that link:

I don't really have a problem since everything I'm doing is MIDI based right now and I don't noticabley hear my computer being loud. I just want to know preventitive measures and know if its 100% neccisary to treat lets say a new computer to make it quiet if you plan on recording on it. I know alot of people with Macs and record with them straight out the box with no problems.

I haven't read all the replies but any time you acoustically treat a computer you increase the overall temperature so there's definately a trade-off involved. If noise is a problem then the best solution would be to simply move the computer far enough away from the mic so it isn't picking it up. Extention cords for keyboard/mouse/monitor are cheap. You could also try quieter fans but whenever air is moving it's going to create noise so that may or may not work for you. And finally, the more harddrives you have, the more noise there will be period.

This works great:

1. Click start
2. Click Turn off computer
3. Wait for shutdown.
4. Verify pc is now quiet.
5. Problem solved
