A Vallejo man was shot Tuesday evening at a memorial celebration for Andre Hicks in the vicinity of Janice Street an Mark Avenue.
While Vallejo police were not available for comment a press time, witnesses at the scene said the victim is 20 or 21 years old and was shot in the neck.
Renee Johnson said the shooting occurred on the opposite side of the vehicle from where she and her three children were standing. She and a friend, who identified herself as Mrs. Johnson, said two girls jumped another girl and then the crowd closed in to watch. A man then raised a gun toward the sky and squeezed off a number of gunshots, apparently trying to stop the fight. But then he inexplicably lowered the weapon and fired into the crowd.
Renee Johnson said no one seemed to know who the gunman was.
She said it was a celebration for Andre Hicks, a rap artist who was known as Mac Dre. Hicks, 34, was shot and killed in Kansas City, Kansas, last Nov. 1.
Numerous officers from Benicia, American Canyon, the California Highway Patrol, Solano County Sheriff's Office and other departments assisted Vallejo police in trying to bring the crowd under control after the gunfire. One witness said she heard about10 gunshots.
Vallejo Police Lt. Kevin Kelley said it was because of the crowd that emergency personnel found it difficult to get to the victim.
Mrs. Johnson said it took 20 minutes for the Vallejo Fire Department to arrive on the scene and said it was because there were so many police cars.
Vallejo police are also investigating a shooting that occurred shortly after 6 p.m. in the 1800 block of Capitol Street.
Police were tight-lipped about the incident except to say that no one was in custody.
The shooting occurred in a brown-shingled building between Tuolumne Street and Solano Avenue. The courthouse is nearby and the building itself is situated between Elam Bail Bonds and Professional Plaza, which houses the offices of an attorney and a dentist.
