because the detective used to be a mob guy back when his dad made the bet. the detective said he used to do the books for one of the guys that killed his dad. so in some way the dectective was involved with the bet... so thats why he had to die....
also i think it was because he had just heard that new evidence over the phone which explained somewhat of why he would do it.
