Shootings On Strip Rattle Tourists
One Metro Officer Suspended After Shooting
LAS VEGAS -- Three separate shootings on the Strip this weekend have left visitors and residents alike worried about area safety.
Metro police said the shootings started Saturday just after 8:30 p.m. Police said the string of shootings started with gunshots behind Diablo's Cantina, which is in front of the Monte Carlo Hotel-Casino. Those shots resulted from a fight that occurred earlier, investigators said.
About four hours later, in what investigators believe to be a separate incident, police said people in two cars began shooting at each other outside the MGM Grand. The gunfire led to police to pull over what they believe to be one of the cars involved, officers said. But when the driver made a suspicious move, investigators said the officer fired at the car.
No one was hurt in any of the incidents, but witnesses to the shootings were left shaken.
"If I had been 2 feet closer," witness Ron Spencer said, "I would have had glass shards and cuts in my head, probably."
Metro police arrested two people in connection to the officer-involved shooting after officers found a shotgun in the car. The officer involved in the shooting is on routine paid administrative leave pending the investigation of the incident.
There have been several shootings on the Strip in the last several months. Four were injured during a shooting at the New York, New York Hotel-Casino in July. In August a man opened fire in the parking lot of the Caesar's Palace Hotel-Casino parking garage, and a shooting in front of the Margaritaville Restaurant left four injured.
