Yes,the lighting effect is a VERY important part of PS...Its gives the ability to add lighting along with a shadow.It helps out a lot with the blending and gives the effect as if the image you're working with really belonging where you place it...

I don't really mess with the lighting filter, I hate altering pixels. I'd rather use gradients and brushes on a seperate layer.

you wanna use photoshop. go to the filter menu and it should be under lighting or somethin'. i'm not at home so i can't look it up now for you.

just use a thin brush, draw some lines, throw on a glow. maybe give it an ocean ripple or some shit. otherwise you need xenofex...

Yup.thats what I do...

go to Filter > Render > Clouds
then go to Filter > Render > Difference Clouds
then Image > Adjustments > Invert
then Image > Adjustments > Levels...and move the middle arrow all the way to the right...
then Image > Adjustments > Color Balance...and set it to the color you want...

thats how i do it...
