Former NBA player Latrell Sprewell officially lost his house Monday. From the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:

A River Hills home belonging to former NBA star Latrell Sprewell was foreclosed on today when he failed to show up in court to contest the action brought by a bank that held his mortgage.

The holder of the mortgage, RBS Citizens Bank, told Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge David Hansher that Sprewell owes $320,284. According to River Hills records, the house is assessed at $610,000 and has an estimated fair market value of $667,980. Spreewell bought the house in 1994 for $405,000.

I know the automatic reaction among fans is to point and laugh at the silly athlete who didn't know how to manage his money, but there's nothing funny about foreclosure. I'm in the process of buying a house, and over half of the houses I walked through were both empty and in a sad state of disrepair as a result of frustrated owners taking it out on their property before losing it to foreclosure, which is becoming a sad trend in my state. After awhile, it's just depressing.

Money mismanagement affects people of all stripes and income levels, and it's sad when it's entirely self-inflicted by somebody who seemingly had it all before letting it slip away. So while some may crack jokes about Spree's regrettable "I've got a family to feed" quote he made while turning down millions of dollars toward the end of his career, I've lost my sense of humor about people losing their homes. Wherever Sprewell is, I feel for him.

Damn that sucks for him. How did he get so broke though? He was in the NBA for over 10 years and he had to of made some money off spinners. I know he didn't create them but he had a big part in why they got so popular. Shit spinners were called sprewells for a minute. He has always been kind of a dumb ass though so I wouldn't be surprised if he pissed all his money away on stupid shit.

Haha, I was just reading about that. 3 year deal worth 21 million and he was insulted saying he has to feed his family. What a loser, I hope he is broke, like broke with no money not his version which apparently is in the 8 figure range.

Wolves offered his old ass 3 years $21 mil. He wanted 2 years $21 mil..
Yet I see where he was coming from....Imagine you work at a warehouse job making $15/hr..all of a sudden they wanna pay you $11/hr, you'd be like 'fuck that!'

But at the same time how can you turn down 21 Mil gaurenteed?

I feel NOTHING for Spree. if you have access to millions and still don't know how to live without losing your things...then screw it.

I feel for those who live paycheck to paycheck and lose homes....but someone who could have paid what he owes with 2 months checks ...pfft screw it.

maybe he should have bought less boats, or less cars, etc etc etc

You obviously have some money otherwise you would know that their is a HUGE difference between 15/hour - 11/hour, and 21mil/3yrs - 21mil/2yrs. Especially because more then likely a job that pays 11-15 bucks an hour is not gonna be that tight. Where as you're getting millions to play a fucking game.

I hope he is broke, like broke with no money...
Example:

It's lunchtime on Tuesday, I'm in the hole on my checking account. I don't get paid till Friday and all I have to eat till then is 1 1/2 bags of sunflower seeds, 1/2 box of cherios (no milk), 2 bottles of MGD, 1 40 of OE that has been sitting out without the cap for the last 6 days. It's gonna be rough till Friday morning, but when it comes I'm smashing to Dennys and getting a SOLID fucking breakfast.

If he owes 320,000 and the house is worth 667,000......that means he has at least 337,000 in equity. That much cash alone could last me at least 8 or 9 years.

I am guessing there is more to this story, because he could have refianced and pulled some of that equity out. Plus I gotta believe that unless Spree was totally moronic, he had more than just one 600K house after playin in the NBA all them years.

I gotta think that he just has most of his money tied up in illiquid assets and he just let this loan default.

Estimated doesnt mean the house is worth that much especially during the real estate crisis we are in at this present time. I think he dumped the house cause in all honesty who wants to live in Milwaukee. Even if he wanted to get rid of it hed still lose out fuck it let the banks worry about that shit. Im sure he has plenty of more houses that hes living comfortably in. It just made headline cause the bank knows they are gonna have a hardtime selling it and it'll be sitting empty for months, good sales gimmick for some dumbfuck to buy a property overpriced just because a basketball player owned it. I bet it gets auctioned in 5 months....
