BEYOND SFPD SEX, LIES &VIDEOTAPES:
Police beating of [SF Western Addition Activist Ace Washi
by mesha Monge-Irizarry Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005 at 11:52 PM
Brother Ace Washington truly has in going on: a social justice activist in SF Western Addition District for decades, Ace is an Anchor on KPOO and Direct Access TV Ch. 29, videotapes hearings of the weekly SF Police Commission and Board of Supervisors on SF.GOV Channel, has his own desk in City Hall Press room #247, is a singer and a producer, owns his own security business, is a painting contractor, new House Manager at Idriss Safe Haven Collective in SF Bayview Hunters Point, and seats on Idriss Stelley Foundation Board of Directors and SF African American Community Policing Relations Board.
There is no time for Brother Ace for much reprieve or fun within his tight schedule...You would assume that this well respected and dedicated member of our community would be shielded from injustice.... Guess again.
Last Friday night, Ace Washington stopped at Rassala's Jazz club on Fillmore and O'Farrel at the end of an exhausting day, to talk to a friend. One of the club's manager told him that he was not welcome in the club and exhorted patrons: "Don't talk to him! He is not welcome in our community !". Ace questioned the allegation and she stated that she was calling the police, upon which Ace responded: "Fine! Please do call the police !".
While Ace stood outside of Rassala's, 4 police officers (none of them AfriKan American), apprehended him, wrestled him to the ground, threatened him with batons and forcefully applied pressure to his legs and chest. One officer twisted his fingers backward while handcuffed, while 8 officers sat on this neck and back, pushing on his buttock with boot and repeatedly kicking his left ankle.
Ace cried out in pain, asking repeatedly what the charges were against him, while witnesses gathered from the club and shops across the street, and 3 additional police cars arrived at the scene. Once arrested and forced into the police car, his fingers were twisted backward again.
Ace was released at 5:30 am on Saturday, charged with assault, resisting arrest and trespassing, although Rassala's seemingly does not have any restraining order against him. When he arrived at Idriss Safe Haven Collective late morning, Ace recounted his ordeal ... and showed me his injuries: substantial swelling and knots on his left leg above the ankle which was stomped on (broken skin), chest, wrists and fingers, inflicted while Ace was on the ground, face down. The brother was exhausted and shook up, just wanted to get a few hours of sleep to recuperate from his beating !
I immediately alerted all other Idriss Stelley Foundation Board members and the AACPRB, as well as Anti Police Brutality entities in the Bay Area. Idriss Stelley Foundation is hiring a forensic photographer to take irrefutable pictures of Ace's injuries (Ace took his own pictures but being dark skin, these might not be conclusive in terms of properly showing bruising), and a private doctor to provide him with a medical report, as emergency interns and staff can often be intimidated and manipulated by the authorities...
As soon as he found out on Saturday, Maurice Campbell, ISF Board Member and Director of Community First Coalition, and David Grace from Indymedia got on the air on my show "SF VILLAGE VOICE" / Indybay Enemy Combatant Radio (SF and nationwide) about the shameless PD assault of Brother Ace Washington. Time was the essence: silence kills in these PD brutalization cases, as Ace would be more at risk, considered as a potential liability for PD and the City, given his prominent activist position in our community, if he did not publicize his fate ASAP ! Ace called on the show and our auditors got to listen live his detail recount of the assault, in a very shaken voice.
SF NAACP Leaman McGriff, (also a member of AACPRB) who was a patron of Rassala's that night stated that he heard the commotion, but "it was very dark outside" and he "didn't know at the time that the incident involved Ace".
A somber New Year's Eve indeed... while many of us extrapolate on the "Blue Ribbon" investigation of the PD racist, sexist and homophobic videotape to amount to nothing but the full exoneration of the Men in Blue, we sadly get confirmation on the SFPD organization KKKulture implementing WWBB ("Walking While Being Black"), with no worries about accountability whatsoever.
A blessing in disguise? If the assault had occurred away from street lights and witnesses, Brother Ace would probably never have made it back to Idriss Safe Haven Collective that Saturday morning, just another casualty of war against the Poor, Black and Brown, regardless of status, visibility or community involvement.
According to Ace Washington: "That encounter on Friday with the police on Fillmore in the Northern Station District in my own community really opened my eyes and gave me first hand experience with police brutality. As a member of ISF and AACPR Board (Western Addition Branch), it is part of my duty to monitor and report these type of police misconducts citywide. After routinely going to these Police Commission meetings , hearing all public comments on police brutlality, and suffering a PD assault as a 260 pd., 5'11'' Black man, I totally felt helpless and victimized for the first time in my life by the Men in Blue. I personally want to take this opportunity to tell our Mayor Newsome, Chief Heather Fong as well as the Police Commission there there is a great need for restructuring and training SFPD as it relates to community policing, after experiencing it first hand. "Ace, On DA Case", now I have a Case ! Listen to my radio show this coming Friday January 6th , one day after my court case on KPOO 89.5 f.m. 4 pm to 5:30 pm, "Ace in your Ear, Maling it Loud and Clear!"
Ace Washington is summoned to appear in Court at the Hall of Injustice at 850 Bryant, SF, Thursday January 5, 2006, 9 am, #101
