In my opinion Melo is deep... he's hit like 5 or 6 game winners this year. He's proven he can make big shots when everything is on the line. But LeBron is an overall better player and he does more for his team than Melo does for his. That would make LeBron more valuable. LeBron runs the point... sets his teammates up. He rebounds... He can score pretty much at will.

Ive had this arguement over and over with people...MVP means different things in different sports...

Baseball=individual award
NBA & NFL="Making your team" better award

Lets run down the POTENTIAL NBA MVP award candidates:

Nash:This guy should STILL be the front runner...who else is gonna make a player like Boris Diaw or Raja Bell GOOD players???

Chauncy Billups:Even without him...Detroit is still contending for a East title...they are WELL coached and have numerous great TEAM players on the squad...therefore...i dont think he should even BE mentioned in the MVP voting...cuase the same could be said for Big Ben,Rip or even Antonio McDyess(who will most likley get 6th man award) for christ sakes!!!

Tony Parker:I will agree that Tony has improved much....its the same as Chauncy....numerous great role players on SA...without him...theyd still be ok..

LeBron:Now...heres a tricky one....he has the same thing hovering over him that Kobe does...would his team absolutely STINK without him? Before the trade...i would say maybe...but after the trade...no.Yes,hes an excellent player...and hes team is glued around him...he does a much better TEAM job than Kobe does...i have a feelign he wont win it this year...but he WILL win it and MULTIPLE times...in the near future...

Kobe:So here we go....tremendous,Jordan-esque scorer...will take on a game by HIMSELF...willing to put team on his back every day....with that being said...his team would be SHIT without him....and that MAKES him a MVP candidate....but that also says that he AINT involving the team ENOUGH or IMPROVING their stats like Nash is...and when you shoot 30 times a game....or score 81 points....i think yuoure making a WORSE case for yourself....the Lakers aint gonna do SHIT in the playoffs...they aint deep enough and its impossible to get past a Pheonix,Dallas or SA in a 7 game set when you have to CONSTANTLY put up 40+ a game for your team to even a have a CHANCE of winning...

Wade/Shaq:Not a chance for either of them....the Heat have cooled ALOT...and when Shaq or Wade is out....they look somewhat lost...even though Wade w/o Shaq is better...they need to be healthy and HUNGRY....to win games...

Chris Paul:Only a rookie...and even though hes meshed WELL and HELPED make his team better...NO is gonna miss the playoffs this year....but maybe in the future....

Kidd:Although one of the best TEAM players ever to play the game...his number are TOO low for him to be considered(which is funny considering this is for "making your team better", not "individual")....without him...they are still good....but would be a DIFFERENT team all around....but you still got Vince and Richard...

Vince Carter:possibly, but hes more in the category of Kobe....hes a great player...but he doenst make his TEAMATES better...although NJ wouldnt be as good without him...

Carmelo Anthony:Should be in the top 3 of candidates....he is THE most consistant player on the squad....but Denver SHOULD be good...they have a seasoned coach and a great supporting cast...WHEN THEY ARE HEALTHY....but he has helped them be a great team night in and night out...

Elton Brand:Should also be in the top 3....outstanding player...has been for years...and the Clippers FINALLY made some RIGHT choices this last off-season and gave him a supporting cast...if i could create my own team....Elton would be my starting PF....Cassel could ALSO be mentioned as a MVP candidate....he fits in well with the style of play...

So MY top 3 are as follows:

Carmello Anthony(gets stronger every year)
Elton Brand(Clippers first playoff appearence in 15-20 years)
Steve Nash(No Amare,No problem)

Good breakdown but I still would say that Kobe and LeBron are more important to their teams. The offense is based around these players. When Kobe sits down the Lakers be getting smashed. He has to score like 50 and 80 points sometimes because his teammates are so inconsistant. LeBron has more help than Kobe.

Phoenix played some this year without Nash... and they did OK. The Lakers wouldn't beat anybody without Kobe.

Not a bad breakdown, but I don't see how Carmelo could be in your top three if Lebron and Kobe aren't. Also you mention Brand (and he is a hell of a player and the clippers are doing well ) but you say cassel could be an mvp candidate...so a team that has two players that could be candidate mean that that one player isnt as valuable as a team that has only one superstar (Lakers, Cavs, Nuggets, Sixers before CWebb)...

Elton is the clear MVP of the TEAM....but Cassell had done a large part in making the Clippers threats this year...

Kobe doesnt trust his team mates....Carmelo does...

You can't hold a player responsible for making his teammates better. It's on that player to make himself better. Knockdown your open shots when you get the opportunity. When Jordan was playing, he drew double team and kicked the ball to Paxson, Kerr, etc.... it was on them to make shots. Nash's teammates make their shots. Kobe's teammates don't. You can't blame Kobe because his teammates don't make their open shots.

Great breakdown Oh Coy!. Let me run thru that real quick.

Nash: Has to be considered. He is the best point in the league, bar none. Everything the Suns do on the offensive end is directly attributed to Nash.

Billups: Will he or should he win. No way. However, IMO he has to be considered because he is the unquestioned leader on the best team (record wise) in the NBA.

Parker: NO FUCKING WAY. He's not even the MVP of his team. I don't care how much of an off year Duncan is having, he is still what makes that team a contender once again. Don't get it twisted.

LeBron: Would be a great choice. He has proven to be a leader this year and the stat sheet is filled up nicely every night.

Kobe: Should win it IMO. Literally carries the Lakers EVERY night. And for those that say he shoots too much and doesn't get his team involved, check this out. When Kobe scores 29 and fewer the Lakers are 12-12. When he gets 30-39 they are 14-14. When Kobe goes for 40+ the Lakers are 16-9. He missed 2 games due to suspension, both of which they lost to Utah.

Wade/Shaq: Wade gets consideration from me. But thay have underachieved this year and that hurts him. Shaq is not even an option at this point in his career.

Paul: Hell of a player but has NO BUSINESS on this list.

Kidd: He is what an MVP is all about. However, you are right in that the numbers just don't add up.

Carter: Not even the MVP of his team. Shouldn't be on the list.

Melo: I have always thought of him as overrated. Until this year. He has really impressed me. But MVP of the league? Not a chance.

Brand: Has to be up there in the voting. You know exactly what you get EVERY night. IMO he is the best PF in the league.

My top 5 goes:
1. Kobe
2. James
3. Nash
4. Brand
5. Wade

You got your opinion, which is cool....but your wrong....and right. This is without a doubt,an individual award. It's not arguable.MVP....Is MOST VALUABLE PLAYER in the League...NOT...Most Valuable Player for his team.BUT THAT'S WHAT THEY SHOULD CALL IT.MOST VALUABLE PLAER TO HIS TEAM.....MVPTHT AWARD.If they(The League) were to state what this award means,I have no doubt that they would say it's for the league's best player.NO QUESTION ABOUT IT.
This award generally is awarded to someone who plays on a winning team, because if your one of the best players...your team is usually doin pretty well,we can all agree on that.We can also agree that stats are a huge factor. If we went by your rules,we might aswell hand it to the PG of the Championship team. His team won,and he is the main distributor of the ball, and is making his team better.

If Tony Parker won MVP and Kobe finished 4th....You are not voting on who is the best INDIVIDUAL PLAYER....You are taking in all sorts of different factors and situations, such as TEAMATES...which makes this a group award, and bogus.

"Seahawks scored just 140 points in the midst of a franchise worst 2-14 season. Despite the misery on offense, Cortez Kennedy shined on Defense winning Defensive player of the Year honors".

I dont make the perameters for the award brotha...i just give who i feel FITS THEIR criteria for MVP....

The best, most SKILLED player in the league that could beat ANYONE one on one is either Kobe,T-Mac or LeBron....but that means squat...
