Metropolitan Police Department officers shot and killed a handcuffed homicide suspect on Saturday morning as the suspect fled officers at an East Las Vegas apartment complex, Undersheriff Doug Gillespie said.

The suspect was shot twice in the back, Gillespie said at the shooting scene at 5250 Stewart Avenue, near Nellis Boulevard.

The suspect was taken to University Medical Center and underwent surgery but died from his wounds, police said.

Although Las Vegas police didn't identify the suspect, acquaintances said his name was "Suave" Scranton and he was in his late teens.

Several acquaintances said Scranton was a suspect in the killing of Kyle Stacey, who they said was shot to death on Tuesday.

Authorities on Saturday would not confirm the identity of the shooting victim or provide information on why he was considered a homicide suspect.

Gillespie declined to go into detail about the shooting, saying police were continuing to investigate the incident.

"I know there will be questions, so please be patient with us," he said.

Saturday's shooting was the seventh so far this year involving a Metropolitan Police Department officer in which a suspect or officer was killed. Most recently, on April 28, Las Vegas police shot and killed another suspect who was allegedly fleeing from police in his car.
The shooting on Saturday took place a little before 8 a.m., Gillespie said.

Police Department homicide detectives went to the Broadstone Sunrise Mountain apartments and took the suspect into custody. Two homicide detectives handcuffed the suspect, with his hands behind his back, and placed him in their vehicle, Gillespie said.
The police then noticed that the vehicle's door had opened and the suspect, who had worked his still-handcuffed hands to the front of his body, had started to run away, Gillespie said. The suspect ran through the parking lot of the gated apartment complex, and the officers fired two rounds at him, hitting the suspect twice in the back, Gillespie said.

"We want a clear message to the media and the public to have patience while we conduct a thorough investigation," said Gillespie, who didn't comment further on the details of the shooting.

The victim wasn't the only suspect homicide detectives wanted to question. James Carter Jr., 16, was with Scranton when police took him into custody on Saturday morning, said Carter's father, James Carter Sr., 48. The elder Carter said his son was booked into jail on murder and attempted murder charges in connection with the slaying of Stacey.

"I am sorry for the family (of Stacey), and my regret goes out to them," he said.

Forrest Sloan, 18, said he was questioned for several hours Saturday morning by police about the shooting death of Stacey. Scranton is alleged to have lured Stacey to the desert and then killed him and stolen his car, said Sloan, who described himself as a friend of Stacey and an acquaintance of Scranton.

Scranton later crashed the vehicle, said Kelvin "Kellz" Coleman, 20, an acquaintance of Scranton and a friend of Stacey. "(Stacey) died for nothing," he said.

Sloan and Michael Starr, 18, who also said he was an acquaintance of Scranton, confirmed that Scranton was the man killed by police on Saturday.

Many residents at the apartment complex asked police questions as they drove through the parking lot. One resident, Frances Kerr, 25, who has lived in the complex for three years, said this was the first homicide she was aware of at the normally quiet Broadstone Sunrise Mountain apartments.

"It shocks me that this happened," she said.

Police are withholding the names of the officers involved in the shooting for 48 hours, in accordance with department policy.

without a doubt, these are the same type of people that blindly believe whatever "facts" government officials and popular media outlets feed them...fuckin brainless tools

i won't claim to know what really happened, but i hope your cousin pulls through, regardless

thru it all,he has made bad decisions in his life and standing around anywhere in oakland or frisco as a young black male is considered to be a dope spot, the whole east oakland could be considered that for that matter, and you (CryptoniX )forget that no matter where he was at,there is still plenty of familys thats trying to better themselves in the communities that they live in. i for one dont kno what actually happened,i just got the news he was shot by the police- i also know that from that side of the family is that the news article that is being spread around is not the complete truth.

unless he was bussin back at the police they had no right to shoot him (in the head/neck) wtf ever happened to shooting sumbody in the arm or leg to dis-mobilize a person,if he was reaching for anything, o and wtf 40 fuckin feet away? they got snipers out on the field???????? he could have stoped him by shooting him in the leg or sum shit,u only get 1 result for aiming at the head of anybody and thats death....however he is still in stable condition....his dad just left my house with the rest of the fam to go visit him...ima go visit him later on tonight.hopefully he pulls through

as far as resisting arrest? im subject myself to try to flee from the boys even tho i dont do nuthin, just because of the fact of how i know the police in frisco and oakland be,refer back to my last thread about the police i made....police plant shit on mafuckas,or do sum other ass foul shit to u...

if he tossed a gun, then there is not another gun right? plus they didnt find shit,or any drugs....this shit is foul...thanks for those that prayed...bayview in frisco will be covering the story...they tryin to get al sharpton and jesse jackson to help out, shit is gonna be real big in the news, still i scream and shout fuck the cops

Oh, you forgot the par where he ran and then resisted arrest,
still doesnt give the right to shoot a man

. it was a kid hanging out at a drug spot
oakland been labeled the drug spot,so what u say is kinda irrelevant,,,u still dont shoot nobody in the head.

all i know is that he got shot, and he is still alive in the hospital on life support in stable condition...thanks to all that cared.still pray for us thank you

fasho mayne

and to be real. i barely met him less then 2months ago for the first time in my life, and that was after his father got out of prison after like 10years,and all his kids was reunited...i got him on video tape from that day to,but rather i knew him for a lifetime or just a few seconds,my blood still runs in his viens

i will never accept the justification involved with shooting him "in the head/neck"

shooting to stop him like the arm or suffa is understandable in that type of situation, but u can cleary tell that he was tryin to kill the young man, that aint koo,no matter how u look at it

C.M.P CEO i feel you mayne.one of my homeboys got shot by a police a couple of months ago and they said the same shit "he reached in his waist band"

peep it out...

Ceres police shot a motorist several times late Tuesday night on the side of Highway 99 in Modesto after a high-speed chase.

Officers pursued the suspect, Kennya Mosley of Ceres, from Darrah Street in Ceres to the shoulder of Highway 99 just north of Kansas Avenue. Mosley, 32, was shot four times and is in critical condition at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, his family said.

Police Chief Art de Werk said an officer fired after Mosley reached into his waistband as he tried to escape. But police did not find a weapon.

Tuesday night's chase started with a foot patrol of the 1900 block of Darrah Street, a neighborhood plagued with crime, de Werk said. Officers said they noticed the cracked windshield and missing front plate on the 1997 Dodge Stratus that Mosley was driving at 11:20 p.m.

An officer motioned for Mosley to stop, but he fled, police said.

Another officer saw the car southbound on Central Avenue near Ceres High School, de Werk said. When the officer tried to stop the car, Mosley entered Highway 99 on the Whitmore Avenue onramp, police said.

Once on the highway, the chase reached speeds of 80 to 90 mph, police said. Officer James Yandell, 34, and trainee Joshua Klinge, 27, followed Mosley in a squad car, de Werk said.

Mosley pulled his car to the shoulder on Highway 99 north of Kansas Avenue after it had mechanical problems, de Werk said.

The chief said Mosley ran from the car and tried to jump a fence east of the highway. Yandell attempted to pull Mosley off the fence. Mosley reached for his waistband, causing Yandell to fear he'd be shot, de Werk said.

Yandell backed off and fired four shots from his .40-caliber handgun, all of them hitting Mosley, de Werk said. Police found no weapon on Mosley or in his car.

Mosley was taken to the hospital and was in critical condition Wednesday after having surgery to his colon, said Janette Hollins, Mosley's aunt. Mosley had not been arrested but was being guarded.

De Werk said Yandell and Klinge were placed on paid administrative leave. Yandell has been with the department since 2002 after serving four years with the Manteca Police Department. Klinge has been on the force nine days.

The Modesto Police Department will investigate the shooting and provide information to the Stanislaus County district attorney's office. It will be the district attorney who will decide whether the shooting was lawful, said Sgt. Craig Gundlach, a Modesto police spokesman.

"I wouldn't expect an officer to wait and see in split-second decision making, especially where there's no opportunity for cover," de Werk said.

Mosley's relatives said they were upset with the shooting, saying police pursued him because he's black and that officers used excessive force.

"He's not a violent person. He shouldn't have ran, but he didn't deserve to be shot like he was," Hollins said.

Mosley had a warrant for his arrest after he failed to report for a three-month jail sentence, Hollins said.

Doctors are waiting to perform more surgery to repair his arm, Hollins said.

"When it escalates (into a chase), you're probably dealing with a fairly dangerous person or someone who has a lot at stake, and you want to apprehend them," de Werk said.
