is it cheap cause there is no defense? callin something cheap is a cop-out when you dont have a counterpoint.

listen to some 9th wonder, nicolay or khrysis beats. not saying they are better of worse than kanye. but fools act like kanye is the greatest thing to producing since the drum set. that sound has been around in the underground for years. not taking away anything that kanye has done, just saying its nothing special. im not sheding any tears. just waiting for somebody to give me a good arguement about kanye. what makes his beats tight??? what makes him a good lyricist/rapper??? i really want to know cause i dont see it

With Late Registration, he brought Hip Hop, musically, to a place where no other artist has...go back and listen to the live instrumentation, (Jon Brion), and listen to the arrangements, listen to the way he chops and sequences his samples...not many people pushing the envelope in that direction as much as Kanye IMO.

Hate him or love him...there aren't many people who care about the musical aspect of Hip Hop as much as he is...

It takes a certain amount of humility, especially in the world of Hip Hop, to call in another producer to help with YOUR album,( Non-Hip Hop at that ) in hopes of making the best music possible.

And at the time where synthesized beats were prominent in Hip Hop...Kanye, along with Just Blaze, brought sampling back to mainstream Hip Hop IMO...they made it 'cool' to sample again.

You can hear the influence that they've had to this very day. Another thing Kanye is doing is helping bridge the gap between mainstream and 'underground' Hip Hop...I can't think of any other artist in Hip Hop besides The Roots who are doing that.

Just my .02, but I think Kanye is great for Hip Hop

Oh yeah...and about the cockiness...rappers have been cocky and boisterous since day one, its part of the appeal IMO...they probably don't always mean it literally, but what it does is get people looking in your direction.

And like they say...all publicity is good publicity.

don't you think it matters not only whether you sample or not but also what and how and how the final product sounds???

I can't stand him as a rapper at all. Plus dude seems to have a god complex too.

On the production tip though I wasn't really a fan until I picked up Common's album "Be." Kanye (and Dilla of course) got down on the production of that album. After that I listend more for his beats and he is really talented behind the boards...but like Dr. Dre that's where he should stay.

I think its pretty irrelevant what people think of him personally. More people are caught up in how he dresses and what he says--

His beats are undeniable
Lyricism on College Dropout is dope

He co-produced BE, one of my favorite cds.
